Canon 15-85 EFS . . is it good enough?

comparing 15-85 and 24-105L on crop sensor, based on a single lens usage, the former will top out due to its more useable focal range.

since you say you don't need more than 15mm after try out the UWAs, then the 15-85 is for you. IQ is comparable with 24-105L, maybe just lacking in a bit of contrast(can be fixed in pp anyway).

Buy based on your budget. Not comparing that u need the sharpest best weight best corner sharpness lens. There is no such lens.
Ask yourself.... Are u going to print up to AO paper size?

Currently i using 15-85mm. Very please w the performance. Why compare sharpness? A good photo is about colour composition n story behind it.

Like driving a car.... U hv a korean car.... But your mind is on a italian sports car.

Buy what u need. Not u want.

Excellent perspective . .thank you :-)

On APS-C, I will always take a 15-85 over 24-105. Those who say 24-105 is far better than 15-85 is only smitten by the red band. I believe the 15-85 will not disappoint you as long as you are comfortable with its variable aperture. Perhaps you might want to rent the 15-85 for a day or two, go around shooting and decide if it is capable of replacing your 24-105. Nobody's opinions matter more than your own.

Sample images on the internet are always subjective. To me, the photos that people put up tells more about the photographer than the lens they are using.

Great perspective, thanks for your input.

Thank you, makes sense.

I just got it and my past experiences personally having owned these previously: 24-105L, 55-250mm, 70-300mm and 18-55mm, I can say it has sharp IQ and the range is good for me. It can stand on the same shoulder as 24-105L in IQ. So far this is the most satisfying lens I have.

Its a good lens, very hardy for sure and it is sharp. A very good walk about lens and brought it around the world with me for skiing in the alps at -20 degrees to the heat and dust of Kenya and it works brilliantly. Its definitely one of my best buy and the hardiness is a huge surprise, although it isnt weather proof or dust proof, it performed flawlessly.

yes, it is indeed useful for travelling in term of focal lenght covered and weight

Owner of a 15-85, used the 17-55 f2.8 on a few trip, cant do without the wide-angle and extra reach...aside from the DOF, i feel that the 15-85 equals the 17-55 in terms of contrast and sharpness.

And it definitely feels awesome when u take great pictures with a kit lens;)...

Wow, I'm blown away with the quantity and quality of input on my first post in this forum. Thank you all very much. Sooooo . . I bit the bullet and bought the Canon 15-85 from B&H. I'll be sure to update this thread after I played with my new lens for a month or so. Thanks again everyone :-)

Is it good enough? Usually the issue is not whether the lens is good enough but whether the photographer is good enough :)

The EF 15-85mm lens use the UD lenses and high-grade finishing, lens IS offers up to four-stop advantage in shutter speed. The UD lenses are use in L lens as well as in EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. We are interested to find out how good the lens perform.

Try to post some photo and also have your feedback on your new lens. :)

Good job, you wont regret it for sure. Though its not waterproof and dust proof, it behaves like one!

Will do :-)

I have both 17-55 and 15-85 on a 60D.

When i first wanted to upgrade my lens from the 18-55 kit, I was considering between the 24-105 and 15-85. I finally decided on the 15-85 because the 9mm diff at the wide end is really noticeable when shooting in tight spaces. IQ wise, I will not comment because I feel that this is subjective. Some of the bros above clearly have differing opinions on IQ on the 15-85. However, the only thing I dislike about this lens is it's variable aperture /f3.5-5.6. (Its rather difficult to take indoor pics of people moving around, thats why i got the 17-55) Then again at around $1050 +/- you really do get what you pay for. If you really want superb IQ, then undoubtedly the 17-55 is the way to go. :)

Enjoy your new lens man! I dont think you will be disappointed.

15-85 is a fantastic lens, extremely sharp, great IQ, forget that it's a 'kit lens'. I like my lens to be sharp & this is sharp. Way better than other kit lenses. Only problem is the lens creep which can get on yr nerves at times.

Since you bought the lens, just go out and enjoy shooting.......

Until the lens become a limitation for you, you know that is the time for you to upgrade.....

I couldn't agree more with your statement about forgetting that it's a 'kit lens', it's just way too broad of a generalization to be of much use any more. From all accounts the 15-85 seems to be a pretty good zoom lens and I can tell you that the 24-105L is a damn good lens even though it's a 'kit lens' too lol. Ok everyone . . . let's just drop the 'kit lens' from our vocabulary . . ok! :)
