Can you use Sigma 50-500mm with D70?

forget the 2x with the sigma 50-500, that's only used if you want to catch pictures of saturn or something. 1.4x can still work adequately, but 2x is pretty useless with the 50-500
 at 500mm +2x TC? f/12.6  No metering and bloody dark viewfinder :bsmilie: .

Might as well get a 1000mm mirror lens; at least it is still f/11 only

The 2x TC will kill off the image quality, rendering the final image very soft. Generally 2x TCs do not work very well with zoom lenses. In addition you will lose two stops of light.
It is not that bad for Nikon's 70-200+2xTC... ask some here who has the combo... ;)

hi watcher
how's life man? haven't seen you since you "shifted" :)

agree with you, the 50-500 on it's own is sufficient.

go see rncw's zoo pix. he shot with the 50-500. really awesome.. very sharp and bright.

you can also use a 2X TC on a 80-200 and you'll get a decent range of 160-400mm (digital terms).

and this setup still gives you a constant apperture throughout the whole range, unlike the 50-500...

and when you don't need the range, remove the TC and you're back to a f2.8

Will I loose the auto-focus functionality if I add 2x TC on Nikon 80-200?
Thanks!

yup, auto-focus will still work.

Nope, your D70 will still AF. You will however lose two stops from your max aperture, meaning it is now f5.6 instead of f2.8. Your images will also appear softer than without the TC stacked on. Try to use the original manufacturer TC (Nikon TC-20E?) to preserve as much image quality as possible with this combo.

not 100% accurate..

depending on the TC that you are using.. and the lense too..

TC-201 with 80-200 AF-D.. no AF no Metering on D70
TC20E with 80-200 AF-D.. no AF
TC20E with 80-200 AF-S AF & Metering

for AF-D lenses to work.. use the Kenko TC's..

ah, thanx for the clarification. then i'm safe as i opted for an AFS instead of an AFD lens recently..

it's best to check the compatibility chart for each TC before buying.

is there a good all purpose website one around other than the respective manufacturer's sites? I only know of the specs at nikon's page
