Since you've not specified which camera platform, you can try some data-mining here.

You do not have to worry about sharpness for this lens.
Some users feedback on the slowness of the Built-In Motor(BIM) but it is acceptable for me.
I also feel not worth to spend a few hundreds more for VC version.
Non-VC should cost ard $600-$650 range.
Not sure if there is any price drop due to introduction of the new VC version.
