Can i use a 2G SIM card in a 3G phone?

hey, was wondering weather can a 2G sim card work in a 3G phone in Singapore? I know that i am unable to use the 3G network, but how bout doing things like sms, calls and other basic stuff?

it works just fine. been using my 3G sim card in the nokia 2626 till i got my E51. no problems at all. :thumbsup:
