I bought a Canon 420EX flash from Cathay Photo about one month before for my graduate convocation in university.
I only test it sever times.
But only two days before the convocation, the flash cannot work. For I need to work, I have no time to repair or exchange it. Then in the convocation, I have no flash to use.
Now I don't want to keep it. Can I return it to Cathay Photo and get my money back?

Of course, not.

Even if you only bought it for 1 day, at the most can only do a 1-to-1 exchange.
Some more, it's been 1 month from date of purchase.
(I'm sure this policy is more or less the same with most shops in Singapore)

You could send it for servicing with Canon and after servicing decide if you want to use it or sell it off.

Would suggest doing some basic troubleshooting like making sure you have fresh fully charged batteries, and that the flash has been properly inserted into the hot shoe and tightened. May be faster than trying to get a 1-to-1 exchange.

I have 8 years experience of flash photography.
It is must be the problem of flash.

I think StreetShooter was just trying to give a quick walkthrough on things that might have affected the flash and not doubting your judgement.

Since it's the flash, try sending it in for repair.

Are you joking or what? You have 8 years of flash photography and you still ask whether you can return your faulty flash to Cathay Photo after 1 month? Hmm.. which university are you from huh?

Sorry, no offence intended.

Hmmm...i believe that was'nt necessary... But i guess you might have over reacted. ;)

Yuan yuan xiang bao he shi liao. :)

Regards!

send in for repair. if you decide to sell, at least you can say it is working and get more $$$.

wats the problem with the flash? something major like cannot on?
or some other mini problem like "max shutter speed how come only 1/250"

some features of the flash u need to totally read up b4 u realise whats going on...

actualyl, doesnt mean you are only restricted to a 1-1 exchange after buyign for one day. you are entitled to a refund if the goods are not of satisfactory quality. If you buy a flash that doesn't work...that is obviously not of satisfactory quality.

however after one month? hmm...the case is weaker as you already had a chance for inspection....blahblah.

anyway its under warranty right? just send in for repair lor. i woudl think trying to find some time is better than throwin few hundred dollars down the toilet.

:p

Because I know in US, if I happen to buy a product with fault, I can return it and get my money back. I just want to know whether I can enjoy the service in Singapore. I think it is no relationship with how well you know the flash tech.
First, thank you to Steetshooter, thanks to your hint. But I am really feel angry with the quality of Canon. I am a die-hard Canon fan. But now, I am really disppointed.

I don't know if you studied quality control, but there is bound to be defective items in a batch of product. Be it in one in thousand, one in million. It's just so that you a bit suay, got the defective one. I hardly hear of defective canon flashes within days of purchase. But hey, that's what the warranty or shop one-to-one exchange is for. Just go for it, there's nothing to lose.

Hi TopGun,

The attitude in singapore is a little different from the US. In US, even if the product has no fault, but you find you don't like it, you can sometimes still return it. In singapore, people are more money-minded and such thing will not happen. Once your money leaves your pocket, it is often hard to get it back, even with a good reason. It's not because it's a canon product, that's the singaporean mentality. Some items do slip through the quality control of all companies.

actually, money-back guarantees have existed in singapore before, remember sellavision? i tend to agree that the consumer market here in singapore is somewhat lacking in maturity as compared to other developed countries, but then again that is a guess, ain't got hard facts to back that up. though i use to know of ppl who bought the mega-memory package off sellavision, dubbed all the tapes, and returned them for a full refund... :sweatsm:

one month and u want a refund? haha. i would love to buy from that shop. i know usa has such refund policies.......... but 1 month?!

Carrefour hypermarket and Ikea practices money back guarantees. Can't remember the duration though... but definitely not 1 mth.

:)

14 days for Carrefour

even though one month seems like a long time since you bought it, but on the other hand, for it to spoil after a month is a short time.
By right consumers can seek for a refund (or one-to-one exchange or change for another product n top up difference) from the retailer on the basis that the good is of unsatisfactory quality as provided for by Sales of Goods Act (Singapore). But knowing Singapore retailers, I doubt they even know of their obligations or will pretend not to know.
If you can be bothered to, you can always file a claim at the Small Claims Tribunal as long as it's within a year i think... costs $10 to file the claim.

But I guess it would be simpler n more pleasant to just use the warranty n send to canon for repair.

hmm. i'm taking biz law now. 1 month is usually considered reasonable amount of time for u to lose ur right to reject a good. Thus, u cant do anything abt it. u've used it several times and its been 1 mth. u've lost the right to exchange at the retailer. all u got now is the warranty with canon.
