Can I compare a Voigt Nokton 35mm f1.4 to a Leica 35mm???

I tend to agree that better gear equal to better picture. Photograph is not equal to picture and photograph composition is subjective, it will depend on who will appreciate the works of the photographer. There is no such thing as best photograph and everyone like the photograph. However a good picture like resolution, color, contrast and detail is measurable and everyone can tell a difference. It is like watching a video show on VCD vs Blueray. Everyone can tell Blueray is better, but if the video content on a VCD is better, one will appreciate the act on the show over the resolution. But if you can watch a great movie on Blueray, why not have this combo. Let not lie to ourselves, better gear equal better result. So, if one can afford, get the best gear and enjoy the output. Your work may not be appreciated by everyone, but as long as you like it and your love one thing you shoot a great photo, you are the best.

Remember this, you get what you pay. Toyota altis is a car, Ferrari is also a car, do they cost 10x difference in price for the cost of make? I guess not. This is like Voigt vs Leica, It is 10x the price difference but you don't get 10x the difference in picture quality. But if you look forward to own something best you can afford, you must decide where your money can lead you too. If you can afford Leica, why not? If you cannot afford, 3MP camera from a phone can give you good photo too. So let not mislead the thread starter between gear and skill.

My advise... you already have one of the best lenses that a photographer could ask for... use the money and travel more and take more pictures. That is money better spent that trying to compare which lens is better....

A lux could buy you a return ticket to any destination in the world and some $$$ spare for accommodation and a few good beer... :)

plus erm, extra services :bsmilie:

i think the Toyota Altis and Ferrari analogy is not quite appropriate here...if there's a toyota that cross the century mark in sub 4 sec like a ferrari does and at one tenth the price, i'd definitely grap it, use it to burn up the tracks and will gladly forgo the italian experience... coming back, its just that a summilux, though expensive it may be, is still cheaper than most toyotas :)

thank goodness we are not judged by the quality of the lens that we carry, rather, we are judged by the image quality that the lens produces. So ferrari and toyota analogy maybe not so appropriate ?

Actually hor ... The greater the gear i buy, the worse my pictures become. Actually my best pictures taken with GRD3, so easy and configurable. The less i think abt the camera the better. Sometimes i go shooting i end up stroking my precious instread of taking pictures

When i was on tour, i was busy in tour bus rubbing my M4 black paint instead of taking pictures.

Great input from everyone... I believe to each his own... some prefer to use the best gears while some prefer to use what they have to express his/her artistic talent. I do know of someone by the name of Chia Aik Beng who only shoots with iPhone and holds international exhibitions with his iPhone pictures.

I believe, to produce pictures of good quality, one needs the right tool. Not necessary the BEST tool, but the right tool to do the right job. There are cameras for landscape and cameras that are good for portraiture. There are also cameras that are great for street and also cameras that are great for close-up and macros.

To imply better and more expensive gears = better pictures , personally, I STRESS, personally, I don't agree. I understand there are many people who insist on that, and I respect their belief.

Anyway, talking about movies... which is also my favourite subject... I don't really enjoy movies these days, even with all the high tech 3D computer generate graphics gizmo, most of the movies storyline are so weak these days. I don't think with bluray, best projector or LED TV will make watching lame movies anymore exciting. And I don't think watching Schindler's List & Awakenings on bluray will touch me more than watching on VHS played back on the 21" CRT TV or on iPad.

I do have the BBB (Buy Buy Buy) or GAS syndrome that many people over here have too. But I don't go for the best and the most expensive gears. My favourite past time is spent on Evil-Bay buying gears of yesteryears that were used to create images which gave them a special character and look that is impossible to replicate with modern gears.

But when you are out on the street, nobody knows you. So my take is if you wanna dress up and flaunt then drive a Ferrari and bring your most flashy gear just for show , otherwise if your on a project then drive a Toyota and bring your most practical gear.
