Hi everyone,

I will be 'dropping' by Singapore for a day sometime soon and wondered whether you could recommend me a well-known camera store to visit. It would need to be a well-known and well-located store which you would recommend tourists to visit :) (I mention this because I can mention places for people visiting Melbourne but it would be a hassle to find).

I basically would like to see whether I can pick up a few things which are otherwise cheaper than in Australia.

If you can refer me a link to the site (which lists stock etc), that would be fabulous.

Thanks for your time! I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
David

Well, I have 2 stores that come to mind straightaway....

1. Cathay Photo (New cameras... Great variety)
@ Peninsula Plaza
111, North Bridge Road
#01-05/07/08
Tel: (65) 6337 4274
www.cathayphoto.com.sg

2. P&G Photographic Centre (Second-hand & repair)
@The Adelphi (opposite Funan the IT Mall)
No. 1 Coleman Street, #B1-04
Tel: (65) 6837 0697

Both of them are located closely in the City Hall Area. Very accessible in the city centre.

There are many more camera shops in the two shopping centres that you can take a look at. :)

Adding on to what xray has posted.

In the Peninsula Plaza area, we have the following shops that most members frequent.

1. Cathay Photo (details as listed above)
2. Eastgear on the 1st Floor (for accessories like CF cards, etc) - www.eastgear.com
3. The Camera Workshop (mainly used cameras - great bargains can be found)
4. 2nd hand shop next to Cathay Photo (forgot the name)
5. Ruby Photo
6. John 3:16 (in Funan IT Mall)

And there are other stores around the area, at last count, probably more than 10 or so in the area within 5 minutes walk from each other.

Collectively, the Peninsula Plaza-Adelphi-Funan IT Mall area can provide you with an entire day's worth of camera-browsing and buying activities. In addition, if you want IT product, Funan IT Mall has tonnes of stuff.

The Must-Go shops are probably Cathay Photo as they are arguably the largest photo retailer in Singapore. They have 3 separate stores (in the same location) roughly divided into:
- Cameras & Lenses (digital and film)
- Tripods, MF, LF, film and darkroom accessories
- Printers/Printing

Thanks for your responses so far! Ah, that's what CP stands for. I've seen that referred to quite a bit recently.

It's a pity that don't have an online catalogue :( Would have been nice to see some prices etc.

if you go to CP's website u'll be able to ask for an e-quote, typically they'll get back to u within 2-3 working days with prices, provided they have stock. :)

Thanks! That's encouraging.

Do you frequent at Camera Exchange in Melbourne or has it closed down already?

Actually some stuff camera stuffs in Melbourne is cheaper than what is available in Singapore, especially if you are a tourist here. Except for film prices which is relatively cheaper over here. Let us know what you are interested to get, so maybe we can recommend you the salesman we usually frequent with them.

Many camera shops have different prices with different stocks. There are some shops around Orchard in Lucky Plaza Shopping Cnetre is not really a good place to buy especially if they know you are not local. As recommended by the members, Cathay Photo, The Camera Workshop, John 3:16, EastGear(mainly memory cards, portable HDD, batteries and some other camera accessories).

Please be aware you are able to claim some GST (Goverment Service Tax) once you leave the airport. Bring your passport out as a proof of your identity as a tourist but of course do it after you bargain with them!

If you are looking for second hand gear, well CS is one of the place to look for bargain items!!!!

Thanks for your response!

Really? I had no idea that Camera Exchange was that good! It's still there but moved a few doors down. I went last week and there didn't seem to be much stuff which was that 'cheap'. I remember the Canon 28-135 IS USM was going for $700AUD second hand, which I thought was pretty expensive. They were also selling the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens for $700.

Hi,

If you plan to get a 5% GST refund, don't forget to show the items to the customs when you leave Singapore. Its a requirement which I wasn't aware of, I sent my stuff by mail overseas before leaving the country, so in the end I couldn't claim the GST (which is about 4% minus some fees).

Another good shop is MS color and Lords Photo (the latter is indeed at Orchard Rd., inside Lucky plaza, but it is the ONLY shop at Orchard I would recommend: Owner is Mr. Chee......he is also able to give you a GST refund form. E.g. his price for the Nikon D70 KIT is slightly less than SGD 2050.....(a month ago).

Lastly, here is a list with some prices that people in Singapore have compiled:

At the bottom there are some links to shops websites too!!
