camera or person behind camera?

Do you think the camera or the person behind the camera is producing good photos?

They long ago stopped getting on my nerves. The BS filter just works seriously overtime when online, sadly for many GWC's who consider themselves photographers or photographers in the making their BS detectors are firmly switched off.

Yeah seen too many of them GWC's who promote their work on modelmayhem.com and call themselves 'professionals' .. It used to piss me off as well, but realized that it's bullshit anyway and these guys aren't going to go very far, so why bother

Amateur site for amateurs only. The real professionals seldom use websites to pick models, they go and use an agent in conjunction with the client.

Absolutely

I thought Ken rockwell was ok?

Anyway I used to think it was the person behind the camera until I realized it was both.

Both are important but the person behind the camera is more important.

Because:
- The capabilities of a camera has a limit, the photographer technically and usually has a higher limit than his/her equipment, provided he/she realize their potential. I.E. Your skills and needs can out-grow your camera but your camera cannot out-grow you. Your camera just doesn't "grow".

- Camera cannot do the photo composition for you. It can help you with exposure. There is auto-ISO, auto focus, auto exposure, auto scene selection, ... but there is just no auto-composition.

no skill + good cam = bad (composition/ concept etc) & sharp
no skill + bad cam = bad & flat
skill + good cam = good & sharp
skill + bad cam = good & flat

but the other issue is - if some snob calls you crap because you have a cheaper cam, you can:
(1) suan him - mandatory step
(2) work hard, save more for the next upgrade
(3) improve your skills in the meantime with what you have

[disclaimer: the above does not refer to fans of plastic cameras or fine artists with a passion for uncommon images. :P]

The person behind the camera is the most important thing to get a good picture out of any bad camera.
But camera also plays an important part in getting good quality pictures, if you want to print it out.

What is good depends on individual's imagination about how they see things in different ways.

you control the cam or the cam control you?
thats the question. :D

The only thing that prevents a person, whether skilled or unskilled, from buying a better camera that what he/ she already has is ... $$$.

Unless there are people who have $$$ but purposely chose a less expensive camera because of their photographic style.

If I struck lottery I would head down to the camera shops immediately. :bsmilie:

hey that's a new never-ending thread on its own. Quickly start the topic, so that this one will be finished, ;)

ohhh dearrr...
ahahah

i honestly believe the minute mr rockwell created that website was the minute we stopped caring about photography and started caring too much about equipment...

he spawned gear freaks to wreck havoc upon the world of photos

sometimes $U(kish camera can also produce beautiful pictures.

Hate to tell you this but long before KR was Phil Greenspun whom to his credit has a forum where people do regularly shred him for his views. Gear mastubators and measurebators have been around for a long long time, as long as there's been amateur photographers in fact.

None of the above.
The correct one is XMM in front of the camera.

i walked past one of those quite a while ago... felt so sorry for the poor girl haha she was getting absolutely dominated by like 20 guys all shoving their little d60's into her.. uh.. "body" ;p

the same theory applies to culinary arts. Give the best chef in the world poor quality ingredients, meat and vegetable and see if he can make magic.

we are all human afterall, some a bit more artistic than others. a good camera will make a good photographer stands out, and allows him to explore his true potential and push his limits a little higher.

but a good camera will not make a poor photographer better.

well a good photographer would still be able to produce even if he uses a lower end camera, as his technical and art direction knowledge are all there. give him a top camera and lens, he would be able to express his full potential.
give a noob a low end camera and he might just produce average pictures. give him a high end camera and he will just take the same kind of pictures except that the quality of the pictures is better due to better sensor and lens etc.

equipment is only important if you are shooting for money, as you need top equipments with top photographers to produce the best photos. For example shooting sports, nature, commercial or event. where you need certain equipment like tele lens, fast frame rate, high resolution etc.

if just for a hobby, the person behind is more impt. and i would rather invest in lens than a camera body.
