Camera bag which does not shout camera bag - what are my choices?

Maybe you can help by suggesting real bags which I can consider instead.

Cheers

bro,

for brands, domke and billingham look nothing like the usual photography bag. especially if you abuse a billingham, it will take the beating and look beaten up and no one will give it a second glance.

alternatively, i take out the inserts from the bags i already have and put it into a normal carryall.. :) works fine too.

The Billingham bags look nice, but are rather costly.
I even tried wrapping up my SLR in clothes, but the bag allows me to whip out the camera quickly, store it and carry my other accessories.

Cheers

that is true..

my advice is, go and look at a billingham. i think most billingham owners will tell you that the bag is well worth the money. ;) at least give it a try before dismissing it! :)

Congratulations on your ability to afford a lot of trips - did you mention that to tell us how many places you can go to or to help me find my bag bro?

These places are mostly safe, apart from Indonesia, and some of the busier capitals in Europe.

Have you been to Rome or Paris? Carrying a bag with a branded logo is a beacon which not only makes your camera target but also the rest of your belongings.

haha, of course it was not my intention to announce where i hv been. am sure there are many people who hv gone more places than i had. moreover, what's the point of telling when u and me don't even meet ? :) yes, i hv been to paris and some eastern european countries...not alone like night86mare though, just with a female partner. also being to venice when several of the members from my tour group got pickpocket...fortunately i 'chained' myself to my bag :) unfortunately, the bag i can recommend only because i have used them before are the ugly and overly padded type...not your type lah ;)

I don't try what I cannot afford.... cheers

dun get me wrong. wasn't referring to the cost. my mini trekker is one of the cheapest but is bulky and overly padded....not to mention ugly...only black. have been with me for almost 11 years now...to all those places i mentioned...well worth the money.

i think he was talking to me :)

...

IMHO, Lowepro have the worst camera bags around as most are NOT built to last and have horrible designs.
Mine tore after a year of light usage as a backup to my 9-year old Billingham 306 which is constantly being beaten to death.

Sounds really scary to head that, especially for one like me who is new to camera backpacks. Where do you buy your Think Tank bags in Singapore?

Wouldn't bear to abuse it if I ever could afford one lol

TS can consider getting one of those rectangular, slightly wider bags and use your own inserts. I'm considering getting some for a Nike that I bought a while ago:)

Other then those buckets types, are there no 3rd party camera inserts for backpacks?:dunno:

Kata bags look reasonable but i think the price gets higher and higher

Cheers
Got my NG 2345 at Alan Photo for $90.

btw, i saw this artisan bag at OP yesterday which looks nice, look like a laptop bag instead.

http://www.artisanandartist.com/bags/gcam7000.htm :)

actually i think its ok to pay a high price for bag cos its an even longer investment then lens+cams... cos some good quality bags can last u a decade or two. Since u can afford lens + cams, why not get a good bag right at the start?

am happy with my current billingham bag now which i double as my normal walkard bag. :)

Looking like a laptop bag defeats the purpose of avoiding thieves if you ask me...

Just to share my views after being back from the 2 cities that you mentioned.
Being yellow skinned, we do attract the attention of pickpockets/robbers in Europe.

However, DSLRs are so common these days, just look around when you are at the arch de triomphe or spanish steps.
Aunties, uncles, and I even saw a monk with a 5D+L lens.
He just walked around with the camera around his neck, (but of cos, maybe he knows shaolin kungfu!)

Unless you are thinking of venturing into dark alleys, or off-beaten tracks very often...otherwise, i think u need not be too paranoid about robbery/theives.
I usually sling the cam over my neck at places of interests, and kept in the bag when I am walking along quieter streets (especially at nights).

I use the lowepro slingshot 200AW, and felt quite safe with it.
I just pull the bag to the front when walking thru' the crowd and normal backpacked it most of the time.
I, personally felt safer with this bag than my crumpler 7MD bag.

Thank you for sharing.
IMHO, I feel you were lucky and took precautions, which many of us Singaporeans travelling abroad do not.
Having a non-descript bag is one additional means of many in which we can help to decrease our profile and cut down on painful losses.

Cheers

Fyi, I attached a whistle to my slingshot bag.
It might come to good use, if someone robs me!
In some countries, people might not understand "HELP! ROBBERY"...so blowing the whistle might be a better option, if sh*t happens.

Within an hour arriving in Paris, and at my hotel's metro station...a poor lone korean lady was nearly in tears as she was pickpocketed at the station.
She was using those large shoulder bag, and she said she was probably picked when a black skinned man brushed against her on the escalators.

Bo pian...Asians in Euorpe.

not quite. thieves dun steal laptops these days cos it had been so common till it became no value (unless u are carrying a macbook air).
