Calling Steadicam (Merlin) Owners

any idea whats the best price for the merlin?
have anyone compare it with the glidecam 2000?

I paid $1,500 at Cathay Photo. It's not a good price compared with ordering from overseas, but it's a bit risky to do that in my opinion. The first unit I got had a faulty screw and the clamp would not hold the tripod adapter firmly to the camera baseplate. Lucky I noticed straight away and Cathay swapped it for a new one, no fuss. If I'd bought from overseas it would have been a hassle (and a cost) to send it back. And imagine if I hadn't noticed and my XH-A1 fell on to the ground? Wah!!

Bro, is your the 'signature' special or limited edition?
Just curious. :)

I paid $1.5k for it too.

Me too got it for $1.5k at Treasure Productions.

I agreed with jaegersing, it is less a hassle when purchase in the local retail store rather than online. Less risk and can get it almost immediately depending on stock.

It says "Signature Series" on the box. Don't know if it's actually any different though.

Is the merlin easy to learn to use??
Never used a steadicam system b4..

Is it worth the money ?
ANyone can post your Merlin clip ?
Cheers.

it is indeed difficult to use....I've been practising hard whenever I could, and till today, I can only achieve a satisfactory shot of the move I want after like 3 to 5 takes.

And heck, I still cannot master my running shots....not easy... :nono:

And to the wedding/event videographers, don't even think of using this because it's damn leychey.... first off, starting and stopping recording is a pain....balancing the cam is another trick which will take a while to set up.....by the time u get your Merlin setup, you've already missed the shot.

I'd stick to traditional handheld anytime for events & only use Merlin for the shots where I can rehearse and afford multiple takes.

BTW, whoever can use merlin for event shots and dares to claim to have at least 70% of good & properly framed shots throughout the time, pls contact me.....show me your reel & I will pay you to be my trainer... ...serious & not joking here... :)

yeah.. the merlin is usually used for B cam in weddings/events.. too tough to use a stabiliser for main cam all the way..

Last week attended a cousin's wedding. The VG used Glidecam 4000 pro and DVX....all the way. The express highlight showed the moves and are quite impressive.

However, I noticed he only used onboard mic and no lights. And seems like did not take a lot of footages because when not taking video he can rest the rig on his shoulder. I think it is not worth it to sacrifice these just so that to get smooth moves. Just my view....:)

If you talk to experience DOP, they will tell you, you can't float all the time! Use it only when dolly is not possible and with some moving shot - use it sparingly! unless you are shooting ER

Anyone renting the merlin? i've tried cinegear already. dun really wanna go to Feg. anyone?
