Hello Jonathan,

Hmm I'd wish to join in the lunch too! Well I happen to be miraculously employed by SSA as a writer/photographer. But afraid my skills are still very much unpolished.

Well hope I'm not too late to join this group. I'm a member of SSA but sad to say I seldom go for group meetings therefore I hardly know any other members here. However I'm looking forward to join any photography outing so as to get to know everyone as well as to learn more abt photography. Cheers! :)

Warm welcome Fr3dY! You can submit your name to Meng Har at SSA so they can inform you if there's any photo outing/sharing. Hope to see you soon, and there's another Sony DSLR camp member!

I've decided to support the Sony (Konica Minolta) DSLR camp since my very first SLR is a Minolta Dynax 500si. Many photographers have voiced their doubts on Sony's entry into DSLR market and whether its cameras can match those from the big players - Nikon and Canon. But I believe the former Minolta Dynax/Maxxum lovers would agree that Sony's newly launched A700 stay faithful to Minolta's feel and controls and even went on to expand on the technological leverage with Sony's own innovations. Thus Sony's position in the market is not a force to be ignored.

Having a larger R&D budget than Nikon and Canon, and building on the existing Minolta's widely acclaimed technologies and lenses, Sony is certainly poised in a good position to compete in this aggressive market. Two technologies that have the advantages: the camera built-in anti-vibration system, as compare to lens built-in anti-vibration, that doesn't require additional technological components on the lens which then added to their costs; that is coupled with Sony's well known steady-shot image stabilization technology. Also Sony's experience and technological leadership in batteries should allow it to effortlessly produce next generation batteries with longer life than its competitors which may still use third-party technologies.

Some commented that the Sony's A700 autofocus 'sucked', but I probably think that's because one tries to handle Sony/Minolta's autofocus from a Nikon or Canon's perspective. Likewise I cannot say the same if I use my feel on a Nikon or Canon DSLR.

Having said all that, most importantly is whether the camera and the inner human spirit can be fused into one, and when that happens, a click of the shutter crystallized the image from our hearts onto the photos. This is probably how Sensei takes his photos, and he does not even need a theme to start with. Now I come to understand there can be 'a dialogue with nature'!

Of course it will never be late to join this group...:) maybe can ask arttl or anyone is free to start a outdoor shoot...

Well as we all know professional photographers are very busy with their work, likewise for arttl. Well I've never organised any outing before therefore I'm very inexperienced. So hopefully there'll be an outing coming soon. :)

Er may I clarify that though being a Sony DSLR supporter, I still very much wanted to own a Nikon or Canon 'cos I believe a true photographer should have versatile knowledge of different systems.

My field of interest/research would be that of nature and social photography. Being still a newbie, I understand that seniors would advice that wedding and/or entertainment/portrait photography (generally event photography) are the paths to explore if photography is to be a tool for living. That is perfectly logical but it is not what I want in life, nor I believe that these are the only forms of photography that can make a living. And also perhaps I'm not a person who like being given orders or ask my subjects to accomodate a certain posture, though there are exceptions. Somehow I feel when photography is subjected to such 'restrictions', it becomes a chore or responsibility than a joyful art.

Hope to share my portfolio and get my first DSLR soon! I'd like to share an interview with the Sony A700 designer posted on Hardwarezone, for your technical reference (sorry I'm bias!):

Huat man! Long time nv join any outing liao.... :P

Hi Kim Seng.

I'm Jisheng a.k.a Kenneth to some. Hope you doesn't have any hard feeling about what we discussed over last saturday. As a photographer's view, equipment is good to have however, I hate about the fact whereby ppl often think of "having a good equipment" will lead you to take a good picture. I will agree with you about Sensei's photographs. Its the life condition and the hearts that matters.

Some of the world's greatest photographers only use 1 camera system in their entire life, Leica. It doesn't matter which system you use. As long as the 'box' projects what is in your head.

In the nutshell, camera is just a box.

:)

Hi Jisheng

How's your exams coming along?

Certainly not, because I really benefited so much from all the sharing, including your frank comments about the Sony SLR. I understand your point completely as everyone has something that he/she likes and dislikes, it's thus unfair to compare with each other. From what I've understand, Sony did spent a lot of efforts by traveling from Tokyo to Osaka where Konica Minolta's plant was to understand the manufacturing process. They also retained and further improved many of Minolta's core technologies. So it's not a blind bought over, but not many people see that.

In clubsnap, too many people purely discussed the technicalities of their equipment and photographs, but failed to see or express the poetry and beauty of the photo itself. It reminds me of the geographer in "The Little Prince" who counted all the mountains and rivers but not flowers!

Jonathan, I guess photography is also a science. Like some scientists can study a particular molecule for their entire lives. For me I guess I won't restrict myself to one system, I'm too curious for that, and I think I can handle it.

:O) Ghim Seng

Good for you den.

All the best to your 'research'! :)
