Calling all Profoto Users

Thanks to this 3 guys who guided me how to use the studio lighting...
IMGP1553-crop.jpg

These 3 " sifu " were actually helping denis to setup the sunlight simulating demo station .
The light used was the soon-to-be-released Profoto Prodaylight 800 air .
This flicker-free "daylight(5000k) " continous light is good for Video , and Photography with combination of Lights from acute b2 air and even the 20 frames / sec Pro 8a.

Perhaps everyone was busy shooting the models that the technicalities were neglected.
I was one of the guilty till I happen to ask one of the three , " what were you guys doing bending over ? ".

So , these Pai Kias make me post this to clear their good name lol.

I have started using my Compact 300. It's indeed a great kit.

I read that the Compacts are supposed to freeze action. However, I notice that when I take my kids at the lowest power for both strobes, there is still movement blur when they do something like jumping or tossing their skirt.

Does it mean that the power is too low to freeze their action? But if I were to adjust the power higher, it'll be too bright.

Hi Rains

The Profoto Compacts have always had a standard flash duration of 1/850s - which while is fast compared to some other strobe units - is not fast enough to freeze razor-sharp action images.
Is there a site that actually says that the compacts are able to freeze action?
When you're shooting with Compacts, try and not bump the settings to more than 1/4 or 1/3 of the full power (so from 1 to 10, try not to go past 2.5 or 3).
Most flash generators & monoblocks work the same way, the lesser the power, the faster the flash duration...

More importantly - if you're going to freeze action, there are 3 things to get right first.
I'm assuming you have a manual DSLR.
1) Get rid of ambient light.
2) Make sure your shutter is not at 1/60 or 1/45. Should be at least 1/125 or go to the max that the camera allows.
3) Shoot only with that one light (compact 300) and make sure that there is no other flash firing as a slave - unless it's faster or same speed.

The reasons for asking you to take these steps are 1) the ambient light (if still around and at the same power of the strobe) will continue to light the subject after your main strobe has popped. This will result in light trails behind the sharp exposure - also known as movement blur.
The shutter speed should not be too slow because if you keep it open - you're allowing the exposure to continue to accept ambient light (which leads to tip #1).
If you have another flash that has a slower duration, that again will continue to light the subject after your main flash and will show up as a second line or in some cases a blur.

Try to get these conditions right and let us know if you experience an improvement in the shots...
:)

Thanks tomohitogo, you're very helpful!

I think I read it in someone's blog or a forum that mentioned that Compacts are excellent for freezing action. This was part of the reason I bought them becos I wanted to use them for my kids and nephews.

I used only 1/4 of the strobes' power (which is the lowest available) becos I get pictures that are too bright for my liking if I set it any higher than that. My shutter speed was 1/160.

From your analysis, there is one thing left for me to do, which is to get rid of the ambient light. I'll try that out the next time I use the lights and let you know the result.

But as far as I remember, the studios I have been to are bright. I would think that they were using ambient light for a continuously brightly-lit environment. I don't quite understand why I don't see pictures with movement blur in those studio pictures while mine have. I don't fancy the idea of taking pictures in a dimly lit environment, that's why I left the ambient lights on.

For using the strobes thus far, I must say I am impressed with Profoto lights. I really like what I see in my pictures. I used to think that the Profoto thread people are exaggerating its quality, but the lights have bowled me over. It's also very easy to use for even a technophobic like me.

Hi Guys,
Just to share with you about my X'mas present which I recently bought for myself.
----->Profoto Air Sync kit for my Compact 300 kit.:vhappy:
Works great and also found out that it can be used to trigger my Nikon via a sync cable .
I hooked one unit in receiver mode to my Nikon , and hold the other on transmitter mode .
I could play with pose with my wife and kids and trigger away .
In doors , the cameras pop-up flash was enough to trigger the Compacts

Yes . The air is a very good radio system alternative to the Pocket wizard .
It does not disturb the emergency service frequencies because it is at 2.4Ghz.
In fact its so good , i heard , that the european brands like Bowens and Hensel will be adopting the Air into their systems.
