Call for collaboration - Heartland 50

After a very interesting kopi session with PettyPoh who makes some of the most amazing timelapse of our little island, I'm proposing a short video collage of clips contributed by clubsnappers. The theme is Heartland 50 for obvious reason.

Content:
content could be timelapses, hperlapses, aerials, slo-mo, long tracks, basically anything you find interesting about the little dot. eg HDB estates, playgrounds, sports complexes, temples, etc As long as it shot in SG, we want it!

Music:
anything but the National Day songs. A local flavor would be interesting, Xinyao, malay folksong, sitar music. Open to suggestions.

Deadline: 31 Sept 2015 comfortable?

Affiliation/ownership: This is strictly for fun and not sanctioned/commission by any organisation. Just a fun experiment to see how forummers can come together and make something greater than the sum of its parts.

Anyone game? Ideas and suggestions welcomed.

UPDATE:
As off 12 July, we have around 15 clubsnappers officially onboard already!
First meeting went very well, with lot's of great ideas and a workplan in place.
Big thanks to Jacephoto for his organisationals thinking or
GRPI (Goal, Role, Process, Interaction) framework:
Below are minutes courtesy of PettyPoh
GOAL > collaboration video > with visuals that are contributed by everyone, appeal to individual person, close to the heart, meaningful
Contributed clips can include a short paragraph to explain the video clips (by the authors)
Minimum format in h.264 (mp4 or mov) 720p 25fps.
Other framerates, larger resolutions also welconed.

ROLE > most participants will be "video contributers"
If there's a need for assistance on edit, work can be split up into various sections, and done by different persons before being rejoined back by the editor with colour correction to be done, where necessary)
Kevin has the ability to assist in parts of edit, and I'm sure a few more guys can easily step forward to help with the edit as well.

Possible suitable structure:
Kevin's concept for the video
Tempo = Slow > Build up > Climax > Slow
Possible insertions of narration extracted from speeches by late Mr Lee

Music
=> Deunamist suggested possibility of using NDP songs
=> Kevin suggested use from royalty-free music such as those from premiumbeat

PROCESS => all to shoot first > submission (last day 30th Sep) > compile and initial edit > additional shoot (where necessary -- pending first edit) > final edit and video release (before end of 2015)
Compilation process > to be done via online (dropbox/wetransfer) to your email account

INTERACTION => Open and flexible based on spirit of collaboration and cooperation.

Additional points
#1 - Number of clips > at this point in time is no limit, my suggestion is within 5 to 10 clips per person
#2 - Length of each submitted clip > no limit but cut to the specific focus (key point) of the particular clip
#3 - Video distribution > final video released to everybody, and can be uploaded to each person's own video account / facebook or can hyperlink back to Vimeo/Youtube page.
#4 - Footage release > "parameters" to be determined and inform Deunamist as he has sample template to use for this

Names / nicks / emails updated into google spreadsheet. PettyPoh will prepare a separate email to everyone who attended today (just for sharing email list), but preference is not to use too much email correspondence on this collaboration work because then it becomes two separate channels for information sharing and dissemination, keeping the conversations within CS forum will likely be more beneficial to everyone (especially those who join in later and wish to catch up on developments on their own).

Welcome aboard and share your thoughts!

thanks to bamboopictures for starting up this thread and suggestion, i'm in support for sure.

perhaps i can just add on a bit of what we talked about and the rationale for this collaboration

i think CS forum is great as a platform for discussions and activities, and i've learned so much from the seniors and professionals here just by looking at their photos, videos, suggested workflows, answers to other members' questions.

there are probably many newbies, amateurs or even professionals who may be interested in learning new things or cross-learning (e.g. newbies may wish to better understand the controls of their camera and the pro video guys may wish to hands-on with new stabilizers/drone systems).

even though it's easy to research online to learn the theory but doing real practice (and likely failing many times) is an even better way to learn.

by having a collaboration project (video themed Heartland 50) to work on, it allows everyone who wishes to participate to go out and shoot anything that appeals to them, and when encountering any problem during the shoot (e.g. stability, white balance, flicker, sharpness, lighting, noise, etc), other participants can also learn and suggest some solutions

it's also likely during the course of this project, that we will get to meet up in small groups and brain-storm ideas and hands-on the equipments that one another like to use

rather than a single person having to put in the time and effort to accomplish one full video, this project allows everyone to contribute a small part, and learn through the process

i have absolutely no idea how the final video will turn out -- could be one with the most beautiful and touching moments, or it could be really bad =) but i'm sure that everyone who wish to join in will get to learn something through the entire process

for files management, my suggestion is that everyone be limited to 5 clips of 5 seconds each, stored in a single folder (folder name can be in this manner -- "CSnick-handphone"), naming of video clips can be something like this? => descriptive of the [scene] [angle/lens] [time] and [movement] (e.g. "hdb flats wide day pan right" or "bishan park children playground closeup evening static")

for preferred file formats, the seniors & professionals can make some suggestions? i only know mp4, mov and 1080p

and once the video clips are ready, just have to email the dropbox link or do a wetransfer

Thank you Bamboopictures for initiating this idea. I would certainly like to contribute to this. Infact, I have been trying to do few things on similar line for some time now. Trying to put together small clips/timelapsees of lesser know places along with the more showcased ones in Singapore.
I was thinking in line of to come up with a small video show-casing Singapore in a first person point of view (don't know if that's the term to be used). Say a person's journey across Singapore, the life style/places etc. I have no idea if this has been done earlier by someone or even if this what you propose now to do. I will be more than happy to contribute.

Best regards,
Bhairav

Thanks for your positive responses!
Bhairav>> Anything goes for now. Obscure and original is good. Tried and tested also welcomed. From quantity comes quality. So submit what you like.
Pettypoh>> Excellent brief! I'm sure there'll be many clubsnappers keen on learning hyperlapses from you. Great way to get the interest going and I'm sure there will many creative outputs from first-timers / beginners once they understand the process you shared!

I've gotten some feedback that the CFC (Call For Collaboration) details are too scant.

Not an exhaustive Q&A list but:

Why 30 Sept?
Absolutely arbitrary date but better than no deadline.

Who is the editor?
Best to have more than one editor. Anyone who is experienced in FCPX, Premiere, Vegas, or any NLE capable of exporting H264 can volunteer. The chosen soundtrack will be analysed for logical breaks and the parts assigned to editors.
Along with a mutually exclusive library of clips to ensure there are no repeated shots in the final product

Can the person submitting the footage have any control over how his footage is used in the final product?
All requests will be entertained subject to the spirit of fairness to all contributors. Contributors can submit edited sequences with transitions/sound effect but not music.

Will 100% of each submission be used?
Very unlikely but possible. I think the priority is in giving everyone who submits some airtime in the final edit
But anyone who feels strongly that every frame be used will have to accept the speeding up of their clip.

Is there a minimum technical criteria?
No. And if anyone insists that their iPhone footage be untreated, ungraded, we will respect that!

The exercise is in the spirit of teamwork and sharing and a bloody good excuse for clubsnappers to congregate and talk-shop, swap tips, network and have a good time.
It's also a good opportunity to pick up some tips from experienced forummers who are into aerial videography, timelapse, stabilisers, jibshots, special and practical effects. Who knows, through collaboration and pooling of resource, elaborate sequence can be planned and executed. Already, there is interest in doing timelapse over water and in the air.

The video likely will end up on Youtube and Vimeo. If it's goes viral, great. If not no-one should be dissappointed.

OK, really difficult for me to pre-empt all questions but keep them coming anyway!

Bamboo, Deunamist and PettyPoh are all my sifu ...

So, of course I hope to be in if selected ... it's like "we are the world" type of timelapse ... kekeke

Time to re-learn what Petty has taught me ...

Time to relearn how to use my slider ...

I can volunteer to do the final edit in FCPX (but I am sure others are better than me) even though most of my timelapse sequence I did in After Effects.

So, when is the first meeting ?

Welcome onboard! Keep checking back on this thread for more details as the job scope may change depending on how much we can split up the workload. Let's target mid July for a first meeting and decide on music, workflow and who do what.

slight correction -- it's more a "we are the world" type of video, rather than just timelapse =) there's potential for aerials, running stabilizers, vehicle mounts, extreme sports, slow-motion, infra-red, animations and even multiple combinations

for those who may have chanced upon this thread and have been hesitant to participate either due to time or skills, there's really no need to worry, because there is no "minimum" contribution and no matter how good/bad the shot looks, as long as it's not against the law (or disrespectful), i'm sure it will be taken into consideration.

in fact, (i feel) good/bad video really doesn't matter, more importantly is that this collaboration exercise provide a common goal for all interested participants to come together and learn (through direct purposeful discussions and even practical sessions) and also use the "outings/meetups" to discuss problems encountered, learn "across-specialty", drink coffee and make friends

for e.g. there could be one running shot (with handheld stabilizer) that you may have wished to try for some time now, but yet to even know how to get a stabilizer balanced properly. those who are already comfortable with stabilizers can assist through a small group outing, do some practical runs and give some tips on getting that shot you have been trying so hard to capture or perhaps if i wish to attempt a vertical hyperlapse move (requiring some specialised equipments and a few assistants), then whoever's available and interested to see how this shot can be done, can join me (by lending me gear, time, and an extra pair of hands) in executing this particular move =)

and here's sharing a short motion timelapse clip that was made during an outing earlier this evening, where a few of us got together to chitchat and learn from one another =)

Hello all!

Pettypoh introduced me to this project. I am Kevin, a student filmmaker!

Here are some of my works : www.vimeo.com/kngjq

Will be glad to be part of this project.

Have a rough concept on how the editing can go :) Maybe we can chill out someday to talk about it.

Welcome onboard Kevin! Big fan of your work. Now this project is cooking!

It's my honour. Maybe we can make something like this for Singapore : https://vimeo.com/132038125.

Excellent video ... i think this video takes a long time to do ... but why not ?

Just wondering, the part where it keeps turning the building (eg in 1:05 to 1:06), how to do that effect ?

Thanks

the benefit of collaboration starting to show => excellent suggestion =)

COUNT ME IN !!!!

big welcome daniyal!

"but why not", exactly the attitude this collaboration project is looking for =)

1:05 to 1:06 is a circular hyperlapse move, likely handheld ... do you think it's a move that you can contribute or have some ideas on?

Shall all who have signed on and all who are waiting by the sidelines meet next Saturday tea time?
I'll try to book a room at the Esplanade library.

thanks bamboopictures for setting up the gathering

i'm good for next saturday (11th july correct?) but have pre-committed afternoon for another appointment. if meetup is scheduled for afternoon, perhaps i can join in at the start and leave earlier?

by the way, sat have ndp rehearsal so likely road closure at some areas =)

if anybody's going to shoot ndp flypast and fireworks, i likely to be at the marina bay area as well

below is flight paths i saw from yesterday rehearsal
$flight-path.jpg
green arrow = black knights (about 17:50) and national flag (about 18:40)
red arrow = "50" formation (a short while after national flag fly past)
21 guns salute (parked right in front of merlion)
then continue aerial column fly past along the red arrow path again

Thanks for the heads up. Forgot about the road closure. Should we do Sunday afternoon instead?
