Buying Ricoh Caplio R4/R40, here or in Hong Kong?

Hi all,

I've decided to buy either the R4 or the new R40 model. The only main difference is the -200mm vs. -160mm zoom, which won't make much difference to me.

I wonder where you've spotted the model in the shops here recently? Any good bargains to be had? I think someone mentioned Alan Photo, but I don't have a recent price quote.

Also, I'm going on a weekend trip to Hong Kong in July. Is there any point in buying a camera liek that over there instead? I hear that the HK salesmen are very hardsell, and also try to cheat by removing accesories from the box.True or not?

Maybe better to stick to "the devil you know", like the dealers in SLS, Funan etc?

HK cheaper.
Go to Wing Shing - you won't get pushed.

Just to report back, I grabbed the R4 from Wing Shing. HK$2680, incl. extra noname battery, safety film for screen protection, 1GB noname SD-card.

I also grabbed a Nikon SB-800, at HK$2580.

Just to set the record straight, Wing Shing and Man Shing actually belong to the same chain, and they have three shops in Mongkok, at three parallell streets. All shop assistants were very correct and not pushy.

I got exactly the same price quote from all of them, so it seems that they have synchronized price lists under the table. The only thing that might differ are the extras, depending on whether they have stock of batteries and unbranded SD cards in each store.

Later, I also went to Tin Cheung Camera in TST, but I found their brand range for P&S to be very limited, focusing only on "pro" brands and SLR (also med/large format, which is not my bag).
