Buying Lens from Pixel and Shutter at Sim Lim

ARgh!!! P n S??? dat shop!! idiotic people inside. i will get osama to bomb dat shop. ;p
but seriously no offence. most shop in SLS are palin cheats. especially e poor tourists. :cry: they r e easiest to cheat. Be it any photgraphy eqiupments, its best to get it from CP, AP or john 3:16
Heh, AP tried to rip me off before (yes, the one at Funan).
I frequent CP for accessories as they have the widest range (though sometimes not the best prices), and for most of my stuff I only go to John 3:16, because of the amazing service they have.
Avoid Sim Lim shops like the plague mate! esp PnS, Song Bros, etc etc....bloody rogues!! Even Alan is quite "unfriendly" to us locals and I despise their service standards...although he is fairly credible as far as his products are concerned and prices not bad too. Overall going to Sim Lim is defi :thumbsd: (all except one shop...see below)

A) Orient Photo (by far the best shop in Sim Lim) - esp if ur willing to take a hedge with grey stuff which is also as good as original but only warranty issues. they will explain to you upfront what you're getting and the service is like WOOWWWWOOOO!! (hell...there is a 8pages long thread on them in CS somewhere!)
B) MS / Cathay - if looking for good stuff, warranty, standard prices etc. Am sure other cam shops are ok too...check out TK etc...best to do some comparison and a bit of leg work before finally purchasing...try calling them in off peak hours...sometimes that is a good quick way to do a check too. Have u tried reading the price guides in CS too?

Can't remember which photo shop (maybe its P n S...only remember on 2nd or 3rd floor) i went to at Sim Lim the other day, was trying to get SD + CF cards for cameras, but had a bad experience...
I asked the "uncle" for SD cards or CF cards and he brought out from a cupboard some. Guess what...no packaging, only the plastic casing with the cards inside. Price? $50++ for SD card...(he think i stupid ar...). Next I question him about the packaging...you know wat he say? "Aiya...uncle won't cheat you one, you got camera, you test test lor!" So how many ppl have "test test" already?

Get ur eyes and legs off sim lim square if u want to buy camera things there.

From an economic point of view, they are not exactly cheating the tourists. I am sure the tourists that come to Singapore who head to Sim Lim specially to buy camera gear are no dummies. But they are still willing to buy at exhorbitant prices. Why? Because it is still significantly cheaper than back in their home country. So in a way, the shops in SLS have adopted "variable pricing", they are trying to price their items as close to the limit of what a tourist is willing to pay. This practice of overpricing for tourists not only exists in SLS. It actually is everywhere. Not just in our country, but many other countries in the region. For example in Indonesia, even the local hotels will charge a foreigner different rates.
But their attitude or behaviour to our own locals downright stinks. :thumbsd:

A better way is to make sure you get the name of the person who is speaking to you. Reserve the set. THEN go down. Otherwise I don't think they are obligated to hold it for you anyway.
At any rate, frequenting one or two shops will earn you favourable treatment naturally. I've never had a problem with trying, ordering, reserving stuff at both MS Colour and Lords. Pretty darn good quotes I get from them too

This is typical SLS-camera-shop practice. When they have no stock, they quote you a cheaper price.

I second Orient Photo at SLS... they are worlds apart from all the other photo shops in SLS... and in certain ways also better than Lord's MS Colour and CP... of course TK Photo at Shaw Tower is another recommendation bu it's not at SLS lah...
It's true... visit the thread given above and you'll see many good feedback and recommendations for Orient Photo...
I bought stuff there... very good service, no tricks, straight forward, upfront about things, honest and friendly... and not to mention good prices for most stuff (not all though...so do your home work...)

That's how we as consumers have power to, reward those that provide great service and punish those that try to cheat us, by boycotting them and spread the word so others wun get cheated.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I went to OP today and inquired about the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens. They quoted me $635 for international warranty set, but must go back to the shop(same as what most of the other posts on OP mentioned).
I decided that I would get the 3 year local warranty set from John 3:16 at $690 instead. So there you go, I've bought it and I'm loving the lens, especially since I'm a sucker for available light photography.
So as mentioned by others, you have to do your own maths when going for any big ticket items.

Yes this is not cheating. I think you guys should get it right that they have every right to charge the highest price they can for every customer. If I am the salesperson, I would try to get the highest profit margin.
What they are guilty of is poor service towards locals, so take your business somewhere else. But Orient Photo (Top floor) is rather good.

As long as they dont lie that's fine. Moses tried to reason with me that other shops are selling SB-600 at $345 are grey products..and his has a local warranty priced at $450.

You are confused here by his words I think. Grey = No warranty by the original manufacturer. Or with a warranty that is not valid in the country that you bought it from.
Basically a grey item will be treated as an item that no longer has a valid warranty by the respective service centres. i.e. They will charge you for servicing, repairs, defects, etc etc.
International warranty will be honoured (as its name implies) whereever there is an official service centre. Provided that you have a valid receipt.
