2 other questions:
1 - is the tele kit lens worth getting?

2- My other option (for a 2nd lens) is to get a second hand 50mm 1.4 (not macro) minolta lens - what price is fair for a good-condition one?

Thanks for all the tips!

you want tele lens? i sell you my Sigma 70-300mm APO F4.5-5.6.. perfect condition.. hardly use it!
better built and all glass leh.. no plastic.. PM me if interested!

Tempting... But I already spent my $$$ on an H5... :(

Its a good DSLR. Go get it. The Super Steady Shot really works - ANY lens fitted to this body gets instant lens stabilisation. Gives the competition something to think about. As for noise, you can use 3rd party noise reduction. But given the 10 megapix, you can just reduce the resolution to 8 megapix and the noise should be compressed away. in any case, the noise would not be so apparent in printouts.

Price is not too bad either.;)

I really am curious at how you can compress the pic and get rid of the noise. This I gotta learn from you. Can you show some examples for us to see?? :dunno:

Bro, there is no eight MP selection for this cam only 5MP. Where did you get this info from?:)

Even so... I can't see how anyone can reducing a file size to 8Mp and get rid of the noise. Thus I would like to see how he does it. Preferably with sample pictures. :)

I think it's more like reduce the noise instead of total removal the noise (we probably can still see a bit of noise even shooting at ISO200 at a clear blue sky  ), during downsizing of the photo, the noise won't be as obvious as 100% full size crop.

Think he mean reducing the filesize for the pics so that the noise won't be so obvious

Yups, when you resize (not crop) the images from 10 megapix to 8 megapix, you are throwing away information. So that you end up with a smaller image. Buy doing that, the noise information is also thrown.

Of course its not really reducing the noise. You are just coming out with an image that looks less noisy at 100% becoz the noisy info has been thrown away. Same reason why a 4R print will not be noisy.

Alternatively you can use software like neat image to reduce the noise of the full sized file. You maintain the 10 megapix but lose some detail due to noise reduction.
:)

Uh... ISO 200 and you can see noise? Mebbe you wanna send it in for a check. Isn't that something weird?? For DSLRs, I believe the noise should only start about ISO 400.

Try processing hundreds of photos on noise ninja. Die.

But with a ISO1600 shot, how much can u reduce?? That's the question. Most cameras these days still face this problem, be it from any camps... :bsmilie:

Now the issue ppl would be interested in is how much tolerance it can give u. Like the maximum ISO before noise is apparent and will cause image deterioration.

This is one shot taken direct from Alpha 100 at ISO1600, just resize 50% (and more compression for web uploading  ) only. It look definitely better than 100% crop.
DSC07700.jpg

Still quite useable to me at this size (1296 x 1936), good enough for 4R print (for my standard) :)

Though if possible, I will try not to use the ISO1600, but make use of the built in SSS instead.

Not bad... looks quite reasonable..

Depend on how one defind noise, when doing 100% crop view of the clear bluesky, it is not very even, the high the ISO, the more uneven it is, and up until certain ISO, some will say that is noise.

Yes same CCD, but check out the D80 vs A100 comparison here.

Thought that had been debated before, the photo wasn't taken at the same exposure setting, and underexposure will bring out the noise more prominently. So that wasn't a fair comparison.

Waiting for DPreview on D80 in more control environment, I bet Phil will do comparison between the 2 cameras.
