YAY! WELCOME! a350 User here btw :D

Welcome. Just got an A300 myself.

hi guys, sorry to hijack this thread. I am thinking to buy A330. The promo at Sony now is that throw in $280 for 2 yrs extended warranty and get a SAL50F18 SAM portrait lens for free. The lens RRP is $215. Is it worth it? I do like to experience taking protrait photos. Oh i hvnt mention, I have never touch a DSLR before, this will be the first. hehe.

Also... Sorry for stupid question... I told you I have never used a DSLR before, I know nuts about them. So I read that SAL50F18 is a prime lens. And I read that prime lens has fixed focal length. All these words I understand.... but... what the heck do they mean? So does that mean I have to be at am exact distance away from the subject?? What is the exact distance in this case?? I know this is a really stupid question. hehehe.. but... I really don't know loh...

The 50mm 1.8 is a really good lens by all accounts. Sounds like a great deal, do make sure to also see if MS color and Cathay have a similar deal. :)

In simplest terms, a prime lens "cannot zoom". So you'll need to move around for composition. but the picture quality is worth it.

Also, you could google "what is a prime lens"

Read more my friend, knowledge is power. The 50mm is a very good lens to have for beginners.

I read..but still confused. From what I read it sounds like the focus point is fixed.. on one website, stated "closest focus : 34cm" . Does that mean I can only shoot someone's face at exactly 34cm away???

Not always 34cm, this means minimum distance is 34cm. If you focus an object, this object at least must be 34cm in front of you (or I must say in front of your cam) or farther.

tat means there's still variable distance where things can be focused...?? so not FIXED at 34cm lah...? then why is it called "fixed focal length"? think i got some serious read up to do... thanks for your answers, guys.

I suggest you go to one of Sony Style to try the 50mm fixed lens yourself. After the tryout, I believe you understand the meaning of fixed lens. Just asks the storekeeper, they very helpful (this is why I like Sony).

oh cool~ they are having sales from 15 Oct. I shall go check it out~

Some 2 cents worth. The grip of the new 3-- series is a little awkward for the hand.

Actually, the A230/330/380 was designed for beginners/ladies, hence the focus on size and hence the small grip.

However, getting a strap actually seem to help with the grip, but the original sony ones are $50+!!!

I believe it is the 'minimal' focal length that is 34cm.

So, if your object is closer then 34cm, you will find that it can't be focused.

At 34cm and above however, you'd be able to focus properly

oh! i understand now! how stuuupid of me!

Prime lens cannot zoom. but can focus any distance right....? i thought cannot zoom means can only focus at a fixed distance. i wondered why anyone wants such lens.. hahahaa.. STTTUUUPiddddd...

By the way, is it better to have 2 lens : 18-55mm and 55-200mm or just get one 18-200mm lens? I've read that image quality will lose out a bit using 18-200mm, albeit more convenient. What do you guys think?

many people get the 18-250 as it gives somewhat better quality images than the kit lenses, and the convenience of not having to change lenses, but it does cost a little more than the 18-200. If you have cash to spare than i'd suggest getting the 18-250 as an "all in one" lens. :) <$750

From what I heard, that may be true but it's a really slow lens, so even though you have an all-in-one wide angle + zoom lens, you have to up your aperture and sensitivity, making it harder for you to shoot at night and/or without a tripod.

But, I'm new too, to yea, my own 2 cents

I'd say go with a dedicated tele zoom. When you have better understanding of the lenses, you can make your own decision as whether to get those super zooms. Remember the 55-200 is quite a bit cheaper than the 18-200/250.

ya, i read that the all in one is slower.. i think i will get dedicated lens.

thanks for all the inputs~
