BULB MODE Self Timer

Hi Guys,

I was trying to use the self timer (2secs) on BULB Mode, but when I press the shoot button, it only activate the self timer but i need to hold down the shoot button until it count from 2 -> 1 -> 0, then I released my finger, it will take the picture. If not, it will not countdown and back to square ZERO

How actually can I use the Self Timer on BULB Mode so that it will take a picture after 2 secs?

PS: I understand we used BULB mode to open the Apecture and taking the light source, actually does the 2 secs open the Apecture and take the picture after it reach 0:think:

I hope someone can give me some insight to this. Thanks.

I am using Canon 60D.

i personally did not try bulb with timer before so not sure whether it will work that way.
but for the part i highlighted in red, the 2 sec does not open any aperture, aperture open only when 0. assuming it works, the aperture will only close when you press the shutter button again.

Read your manual again. Self timer is to delay the beginning of the exposure (opening of shutter, btw. Aperture is actually closing / stopping down to your predefined value). If you use bulb exposure mode then the exposure time is defined by pressing and releasing of the shutter button. For bulb is it mandatory to use tripod external shutter release (e.g. cable, radio trigger) to eliminate vibrations and handshake.

The part I highlighted in bold sounds a bit wrong

Bulb mode is usually used when you need a shutter opening that is longer than 30seconds, which is the longest duration that can be preset into the camera.
If you need a shutter speed of 1second, for example, I don't see why you would need Bulb Mode.

May I suggest using a cable or remote shutter release when using bulb mode, instead of trying to use the self-timer.

most camera can have slow shutter speed up to 30 sec, that including 60D, why would you need to use Bulb mode to make a 2sec exposure?

uncle catchlights, I think TS meant the self-timer 2sec delay... not 2sec shutter speed.

i think u got confused.

this 2 secs is not meant to be use for Bulb mode. Its like u doing a self portrait, u want the shutter to delay the firing by 2 seconds. There is also a 10 seconds delay in case u need to run further away.

to shoot bulb mode, the first press is to open the shutter, u will need to press and hold till X seconds u want then release, then shutter close. If u dun want to do it this way, u will need a shutter release cable. Canon cameras dun have built in timer for bulb mode (but i am not sure if the 1Ds series got or not).

time to get yourself a shutter release cable with timer or 3rd party battery grip with timer if u want to shoot bulb mode but dun want to press and hold the shutter button (confirm will cause camera shake even if on tripod due to trembling or shaky hands).

to TS, for bulb mode you need to press on to the shutter release thru out the exposure time. for self timer release, you are triggering the shutter at a delay time.

you using self timer release and bulb mode together will be defeating the purpose of cutting down possible camera movement during exposure time, since your hand in contact with the camera during the exposure time.

Timer is only useful if you're taking below the 30s preset.. For bulb mode you need to buy remote.
Check mass sales/ 2nd hand. It's not that expensive.

Thank you all for the comments and advice. I have now a better understanding, i will explore further and learn the technical.

I will be attending the class this Friday, at least i will appreciate the camera more and understand more when the Instrutor talk.
