Hi guys, i just sold my 18-105mm VR kit lens and now thinking of a replacement. Care to recommend a budget wide angle lens? Not sure if I can buy a decent wide angle at around $500 budget??;):think:

the truth is...u seldom c a wide angle len going for ard tat price.
it's normally higher.

i think u hv better luck findin a tamron 17-50 f/2.8...

may i know how much is the tamron 17-50 f/2.8?

2nd hand around $500, can have a look n the B&S section.

by the way TS, why did you sell your 18-105? the range to me is veli good... :bsmilie:

tamron 17-50 is going for 600 ++,

depends on where you buy also.

to TS, there is a tokina 10-24 f/3.5-4.5

however it's rather soft imo.

if you really are into wide-angle,

why not invest in a good one such as the nikkor 10-24 f/3.5-4.5?

You dun say why u sold off your 18-105VR ... if it's wider than that that you want, the Tamron dun fit yr bill. Why not try Tokina 12-24 f4 ... try n squeeze abit more can get 1 good one. :)

Maybe for a start, your budget around $500/- u can look out for the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 wide angle lens which i am using currently, however quality wise it is not as sharp as the tokina 12-24 f/4. Read thru some of the reviews the tokina ATX 124 f/4 wide angle series are a good buy. think the price for a 2nd hand one should be around $650+, if u have a higher budget, probably set on the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. It is one of the best and fast lens i have come across. :)

i sold because i want to experience using a dedicated wider lens. though my budget is limited, can probably stretch to 600-650...
:dunno:

stretch it to 1000 and get the nikkor 10-24,

end of story,

it's a good enough lens for most wide-angle uses (unless indoor)

Dedicated as in prime? Then yr budget wun be enuf as u are on a DX cam. Try a UWA zoom instead and with the stretched budget, the Tokina 12-24 F4 in good 2nd hand form fits the bill ... u go try 1. The built has a solid feel to it. :)

Errr ... stretch it to +/- $2.4k and get the Nikkor 14-24 f2.8 and you got a lens for life. :bsmilie:  :bsmilie:

sorry to hear, but it truly is a very good lens

if you can, you should spend it here and you won't regret

will consider and might try to save up for this :dunno:

Tokina 12-24 f4 on D80. Shot at f8, 1/60, ISO100, 12mm.

Sharpness no discerning differences with the Nikkor version once you stop down to f8. Pre owned market you can get at around $550. Its a great lens.

Nikkor 14-24 f2.8 on D80. Shot at f2.8, 1/8, ISO800, 14mm.

The crazy sharpness wide open enables shooting handheld at night (especially on DX you get the center sweetest spot). Real situation sky darker than picture actually, but the exposure made up for it. This is where it makes the differences between have a photo or having no useable photos at all, unless you lugged a tripod along.

Both make good photos, just need to understand different capabilities.

haha but he's on DX...

if he's on FX i will poison him alr!

ok i also did mention the tokina 10-24,

TS, if you really cannot stretch you can seriously consider the abovementioned lens.

i managed to check out the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, the salesman at Challenger Funan told me that it's one the best wide lens you can find. is it true? currently priced around 900++

Haha! If hv the budget for it, why not on DX? Then after that we can poison him with a FX :bsmilie:
