bringing out your rolls of film on holiday?

Hi guys,

I am still in infant when comes to film photography so please bear with me.

I did some prior research and it leads me to either using lead bags to stock these films when passing the scanner at airports or request for hand carry checks.

How you guys bring out your films out of the country and pass those airport scanners without spoiling your films?

Please share some tips with me :embrass: cos I am thinking of bringing a few rolls of films for my Melbourne trip next mth.

I thought most modern scanners are filmsafe?

Oh, apparently not. But it probably won't matter. It seems that the hand carry scanners are less damaging than the check-in scanners?

Airport X-ray check for photographers

yeah, i read earlier that hand carry is better... cos the scanner for check in luggage is more damaging.

but just curious whether I need to specifically take out my films and carry on my hand rather then let it pass the scanner?

or like some said (from my research), keep it in a lead bag.

I think it has been discussed very throughly in cs already on older threads, but the gist is that check in scanners will definitely wreck the film and hand carry scanners are generally safe to pass through..

Some users have reported that they still get xray exposed films, but generally most users don't have any issues. You can try asking for a manual inspection, but you may not be entertained. Personally for me, I have not faced any issues with the hand carry scanners.

Lead bags are generally agreed to be counter productive in a airport situation and not recommended..

Perhaps buy film when you are in Melbourne. Have processed there whatever you shoot, that way the negs or slides you return with will not be affected??

yup that will be the last resort if i have to.

guess i will risk it this time and see how it goes.

Aussie film is expensive... It was already ex 5-6yrs ago...

Bring low ISO film, hear higher speeds easier to fog if you're going through a lot of machines.

Nikkornos and some other guys had a discussion about this in some other thread. Think they said, ask the staff to hand check your film, with a SMILE!

ISO 400 not consider high right?

ISO 400 not consider high right?

mid-range la. considering when they market 400 as high speed film. Though I think most of us think 800 then start to high speed.

50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400

have brought film to a number of countries and have always put them them through the hand carry scanners. no problems so far. i usually carry iso400 film. no need for lead bags. i just put them in my hand carry and out them through the scanners

and yup, film is really expensive in australia... enjoy your trip!

There is no need to separate the films into lead bags unless you are bringing along very high ISO films...so far, I have got no issues and I always hand carry the films and not check them in.

Went through X-Ray with ISO 400 film, not a problem.

Brought some Natura 1600 film from Japan a few years back, shot without any issues in Singapore also.

Thanks guys! Now I am more confident to bring my films :D

If you're not carrying too many films, then maybe can keep in your pocket or something? Like wear a jacket or something and keep inside the jacket? it is non metallic, lol. I don't think that scanner which we all have to walk through is that dangerous to the film. Maybe the one that scans the hand carry bag is?. But anw, if it was dangerous, then last time before digital how? every tourist's film camera picture will be all gone lor, lol.

I have been through scanners after scanners at the airport partly due to the fact that I am based oversea and have to make frequent travel home or else where.
Never had mine films ranging from ISO 100 to 1600 been damaged by the scanners before.

Personally I feel that this idea of 'scanner damaging film' is just a viral urban legend, dun scare youself by reading too much about it:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

Well those films u buy thru adorama n bnh are all flown here via checked in xray..

i also have brought film both in and out of singapore. No issues
