Breakdown on North-South MRT Line

can ask those good Technical staff back or not?? :embrass:

Was told that there is track fault in west n east bound service... Again...

It seems all the problems start surfacing...

Like xtemujin said... it happens a few years back... don't think worker would stay at home and wait for the job to return.

that day when i went for a CS outing, i met a girl. she told me her relatives work in smrt.. and that locals are not given training opportunity to upgrade themselves, instead they groom people from China! and these Chinese are not even citizens!!!

amazing!

May I know in which department are those CHINA workers working at ?? I've work for SMRT the last 13+ years... Never have I heard that there are CHINA people around the workshop or in Train Operation... doing office work at HQ, maybe...

And if a person from CHINA could do better work... why should that person not be 'groom' ??

no idea which dept..

agreed on your 2nd statement, but i just hope the Singaporean First principle will be applied, else i really don't know what is the meaning of a country.. my main worry is that there will be Singaporeans who are left behind and unattended...

One interesting I like to share with you...

At my department... I work with Malaysia PR (20%) and S'porean (80%)... there are those who could work... and those who find excuses from work... therefore I've always believe that promotion or upgrading should depends on how well you work, can work, is more important than where you came from... or which race you belong to.

yes, of course. i agreed with u.

in my previous job, where we work on a very large scale IT project, those FTs from india, UK, USA, Australia etc.. alot of them can't deliver, but can talk well.. they occupied senior roles.. they hire their own race and soon u see their husbands, wives, bf and gf .. all come here..

there are only a few China Chinese, but they can deliver. So in the end, most of the load is handled by locals and some m'sian..

Two incidents today, affecting both circle and east-west lines.

IMHO most Singaporeans are not interested in pursing engineering as a career path despite holding the relevant qualification with most preferring to seek higher education and greener pastures elsewhere. Non Singaporean aircraft engineers and technicians in some sectors of my industry are pretty much a majority and sometimes when I interview locals for certain job positions I have to request that they go home and give a second thought about it before literally committing ~12.5% of their lifespan away to the company.

East-West, Circle Lines resume services, following delays
By Vimita Mohandas, Karen Ng | Posted: 08 January 2012 1304 hrs

SINGAPORE: Commuters on the Circle and East-West Lines took longer than usual to get to their destinations on Sunday.

The Circle Line service was delayed due to a signalling fault, while the delay in the East-West Line was blamed on a power fault.

SMRT said on its Twitter site at about 3.00 pm, the Circle Line service was back to normal.

The signalling fault was detected at Caldecott Station at around 12.45pm.

As such, trains plying between Caldecott and Botanic Garden stations in both directions on the Circle Line had to move slower for some three hours, until service returned to normal at about 4pm.

Trains were also turned around at Tai Seng, Marymount and Farrer Road stations to maintain normal train frequency along the unaffected stretches on the Circle Line.

SMRT said announcements were made at all Circle Line stations to inform passengers of the delay in train services.

One commuter, Lynette Lee, felt the delay was very long.

She told Channel NewsAsia that she boarded the train from Paya Lebar to Botanic Gardens at about 12.50pm.

Just before the train arrived at Caldecott Station, it suddenly came to a halt.

She said the train sat in the tunnel for 10 to 15 minutes.

Then it started moving - at jogger's pace - towards the station.

At Caldecott Station, she heard the announcement that there would be a "slight delay" in service.

She said a driver came on board to manually drive the train, and was taking instructions and communicating.

She said the ride between two stations alone - from Caldecott to Botanic Gardens - took about 25 minutes.

Another commuter told Channel NewsAsia that he was at Serangoon station when he heard an announcement that there would be "no train service" between Marymount and Farrer Road stations.

He said he understands that commuters had to get off at Marymount station because the train could not proceed to Farrer Road station.

He said commuters were advised to find alternative transport.

Separately, train service on the East-West Line between Boon Lay and Joo Koon was also delayed Sunday afternoon due to a suspected power fault between the two stations, which was detected at about 12.30pm.

This resulted in an additional two-minute waiting time for commuters on the east-bound service.

At about 2.00 pm, SMRT said the track fault had cleared and services on all lines were operating normally but urged commuters to allow extra time for travel due to wet tracks.

SMRT told Channel NewsAsia that the problem started at about 12.30 pm on Sunday.

At about 1.00 pm, SMRT said east-bound and west-bound services between Boon Lay and Joo Koon were slightly delayed due to a track fault.

Some commuters were asked to alight from one of the trains at Lakeside station as a precaution.

Commuters had to wait an extra two minutes for the trains.

A commuter said: "I've been staying here for a while. I think it's quite true there have been some delays lately. It's a bit irritating but other than that, it doesn't really affect me that much yet. But it would be good if we really have a smooth transportation system."

Callers to the Channel NewsAsia reported similar delays.

One commuter, Stanley, said he was at City Hall station when he heard the announcement at about 12.40 pm of a delay in service.

Even SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa resign for another Thousand Times, the damage is already too deep to salvage

I wonder what's going on at smrt: all the board of directors down to the chief op manger must be praying very hard that there isn't any more incidents happening since the black Thursday night that started it all......but their prayers are still not answer, a simple count would easily pass a 5 count the number of incidents still happening since. One time is signal fault, another is power cut and so on and on! Even the escalator at raffles place mal-function at least on 3 occasions during peak hours, creating so much in convenience to all commuters. What has happen to the once error free mrt system, is it just wear and tear that is really the culprit. Or there is simply something drastically basic wrong with the system and/or management capability and maintenance? Its simply astonishing that there was Another incident happened again yesterday.when is this going to end, probably not, as we were heard time and again, no system is perfect, so our mrt system faults happens is and will be acceptable. Enough has been said and repeated, at the end of the day, just keep your patience, I rest my case.

they should just check the whole system thoroughly once and for all and give it a clean bill of health for 2012. now they are just fighting fires....

I don't know what they are doing, but if they have to beef up the inspection teams or do a thorough engineering assessment/case study, they better hurry up and do it. Otherwise, all I see is abject incompetence.

You know, I suspect this is the inherent problem that has finally come to bite us in the arse. The truth is, relative to most first world countries, are engineers are paid less. Who wants to be paid less in a country that has first world costs of living?

They do... but the 1st rule is that the system as a whole, can't stop passenger service. Any check could only be done between the time of 1am-4:30am.... that is 3+hr a night. With over 80+Km of tracks and rails... how much do you think could be check for 3hr a night. If something is found to be wrong with a part of the track at 3:25am... no way it could do repair till tomorrow night because all maintenance jobs must be finish by 4:30am and vehicles to return to depot by 5am... the track must be cleared before the 1st passenger train goes for service at 5:20am.

LTA is trying hard to wash the dirt from their hands... by me and my co-workers felt that they are also partly at fault for what is happening now, with their policy to push for greater ridership on an aging system...

well, they need to re-prioritise. what is more important? ride safety or retail profits?
There is no such thing as "cannot be done" it's only whether they want to SPEND the money to get it done.
not enough manpower? can always appoint engineers from the private sector to supplement LTA/SMRT engineers to check the tracks.
not enough time? can always shorten train operating hours temporarily, so thet the last train ends at 12mn and the 1st train runs at 6am.
i'm quite sure every singaporean understands the meaning of SAFETY FIRST.
take a look at RWS. they shut battlestar galactica for 1 YEAR just to make doubly sure that the ride was safe.
the root of the problem is that not enough resources have been allocated to OPERATIONAL MAINTENANCE, which includes regular and thorough checks of the entire MRT network.
of course we expect this now to change, given what has happened so far.

You have outlined nicely the problem now facing the SMRT, how can you in reality do a FULL Track Maintenance and do any repairs within 3 hours. At the most I would assume that the Maintenance staff are doing visual inspections, reporting any defects, and as you have stated, repair the following night. Which is Reactive Maintenance. Would be interesting to know what was the expected lifespan for the present lines effected.

As I outlined in a previous post, the system is aging, ridership increasing, more trains than 24 years ago, so more breakdowns will happen. You can bet LTA will find fault with the records they have requested and put the blame entirely on SMRT, which could have merit, as its been stated in this thread and numerous media articles, the SAW did manage to LOSE ALL the people whom had the knowledge required to run a train system.

Their is no easy solution to solve this problem and the Commuters will only suffer more and some hard decisions will have to be made. I do not envy whomever takes over from this mess, as results will be expected immediately, as everyone will become impatient.

Cheers ....

If LTA agree... of course no problem. The very problem is when nothing happens, LTA won't want to be the one being blame for shorting train service hour. Every once in awhile... letter will appear at HQ or Straits Time Forum from S'porean who demand/request that train service be extended till 2-3am... not trying to find excuse for SMRT... but you won't believe the balancing act SMRT have to do between LTA's demand of increasing service due to population grown, passengers demand for longer service hour, shortage of manpower willing to work 7 shift (train side) and on weekend and public holidays... and lets not forget SMRT is a listed company... shareholder not care about you but how much they can get back....
