Breakdown on North-South MRT Line

Too much emphasis on "SOP". When the fiasco happens, the press conference say not enough SOP or SOP not comprehensive enough.
I think they are on the wrong track. It is not about SOP. "Not on the SOP" or "no SOP" - does not mean you stop thinking and reacting to new and unpredictable situations. You don't become brain dead and just wait to be told what to do.

It is about empowerment of ground staff, so when they do something to alleviate the situation without waiting for top mgt instructions, they do not have to worry about being blamed or punished later.

here is also another :)

NUTS (no u turn syndrome)

anything that is not SOP, requires green light from the higher ups. which in return, needs more green light from more higher ups.

its not just in SMRT really. schools too. i had my fair share of that.

Yes, I do think this sums up the situation when the trains broke down.
Station staff and SMRT as a whole was more interested in matching situation and actions to 'template' than treating commuters as people and taking any means necessary to get people comfortable or out of the situation.

MTR in HK at peak hour is a nightmare lols... Door closing till ppl rush in... driver need retry door close ~2-3 times than can go.

At the circle line, the station staff only interested to prevent us not to go in anymore as the train is supposedly full (but lots of space in middle of carriage).
Why?
Cause if the train doors cannot close or needs to re-close and all that, it hinders the train times.
I'd rather they focus on asking (or shoving ) ppl into trains and overall safety (eg. blow a whistle for all clear).

actually... cannot view at it this way.

look at hossan leong when he decided to take a Uturn when there is no sign :)

it is understandable why sg people won't.

sooo... now which genius setup this system? something to think about.

It's all about maturity. If the people are not mature enough, you better have rules.

Take driving, it's mostly about giving way and accommodating fellow road users, how many practice this vs right of way mentality.

Littering, look at public parks and places, is it not to litter vs ability to get away with it,

I just think if you have a CEO from DFS running the SMRT, what do you expect???

The thing she is the most famous for is setting up "shops" in MRT station. Common do you expect her to place emphasis on Engineering staff???

The board of directors should have anticipated this when they placed her on the helm. The CEO will be focused on revenue, opening retail spaces in MRT stations. What about the trains? What about maintenance?

Same for Chartered Semi conductor. They put an accountant as CEO so all he could do is to count money.... Look at where our Chartered Semi ended up....

I believe the background of the CEO is very impt. Different people will emphasize different things. If you put an Accountant as CEO, don't expect your company to have leading technology. simple as that.

If you put a CEO from DFS to run SMRT, you can expect better service, more shops in your MRT stations. Maintenance??? Technical Stuff??? common, who are you kidding...

You win some you lose some. It all depends on what your priorities are.

Intel's current CEO is not an engineer (Paul S. Otellini). Yet Intel is still raking in profits (he won the original IBM contract and as CEO got the Apple deal) and at the cutting edge of semiconductor technology (Core, Core2, metal gates, 3D transistors etc developed under his watch).

Anyway I've done some work for GlobalFoundries (Chartered) and seeing the way the run the place is just sad.

Ya its like that.. Thats why Apple co-founder? said Apple never happens here.

The closest SG ever got to Apple was Creative - and "NUTS" was coined by Creative's boss.

we know haha. and creative has been in the red the past 3 years i think

I know a couple of ex-Creative guys. They do solid engineering work, but everyone's on the Apple love train.

Not sure if you're responding to my comment, but if there are more cars per train, won't the weight be distributed over a larger section of the track? Of course, as it is now, even if the tracks can take the extra weight, or even higher train speed, the stations are already built and can't be easily extended to accommodate the extra cars. Although they could have improved upon the 20 plus year old NSL and EWL design when they built the CCL and NEL.

That is on the assumption that the number of passengers remains constant while the increase in cabins serving to facilitate a lower mass per unit space. The reality is that with additional cabins people sees it as an opportunity to leverage on the maximum available space. This results in maximum occupancy in each cabins.
Consider a scenario where there are 10 train cabins; each cabin holds up to a maximum of 10 people. In order to extol an equation of lower stress per unit space on the tracks or cabin, we either increase the number of cabins while allowing the amount of total people to remain constant, or, we reduce the total amount of people while the number of cabins remain.

Increasing the number of cabins in tandem with the number of people does not change the equation. The progression must never be linear.

I'm not sure if the whistle blowing will work for the Circle Line.

It is usually driverless, based on my understanding.

you know... i can foresee many people who will make use of this situation to cause trouble for SMRT, by giving false alarms and playing pranks.

question is... will SMRT be able to handle it all. :bsmilie:

fr observations, they usually have 1 staff member in the front car who have keys to the onboard controls
(not a regular commuter on that line, so i like to stand at that end and watch the view 8] )

depends got anything written in ops manual or not..
mite be a bit hard to wake boss up and "how ah?"

Nah, Saw Phaik Hwa is no mere monkey. Definitely, ordinary peanuts won't do lah. She is a big gorilla, so she is paid big peanuts already, you know, the type which is priced at $600k a packet. You can get this kind of $600k peanuts on in Uniquely Singapore, as we are led into the Next Lap of throat-slitting prices.

Saw Phaik Hwa is a real 800kg gorilla, and she has the backing of King Kong and Queen Kong. Though our Transport Minister may also be clutching a few packets of $600k peanuts, he is a mere chimpanzee by comparison, occasionally baring the cursory trademark protruding chimp-like teeth (for wayang purpose). Most of the time, just letting off some condescending chatter like a macaque gone bananas!

Raymond Lim could not do anything and in the end had to be the made the scapegoat and sacrificed on the altar. Not sure if LTY can do anything better.
I think we need to pay more peanuts for better SMRT service.

:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

The oversized saw phaik hwa gorilla need to be replaced! SMRT need a new CEO with proper expertise in managing train services. And giving smrt a fine does nothing for the commuters lah. Fares should be pegged to the service standard and dropped accordingly.

down with saw phaik hwa!

Not trying to turn this into a political thread, but i heard the smrt ceo is good friends with ho ching, so even when the previous transport minister wanted to sack her for not performing, he couldn't do it. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

dunno but the following is true. Seriously I did not know we had a HR guy as COO in SMRT....
