Yes brands do matter. Actually no let me take that back. Brands don't matter but the technology behind the brands matter.
Besides the fact that CF cards have speed ratings eg a 24X is faster than a 16X card, any other CF technology also plays a part.
Example. I have a 24X Hagiwara card and a 24X Lexar pro WA card.
My D100 supports lexar's WA technology hence it is able to harness the extra speed gains from that technology.
However, if your camera doesn't support WA by lexar for example you are better off getting a high speed XXX brand than getting a 'brand' name like lexar.
Just make sure you do you homework to ensure that you get the greatest bang for the buck.

Need some respond and experience from you guys!!!
Even since i bought the Ridata 128MB 16x it had given me a lot of compatibility issue like:
1) Windows 2000 does not recognise it at all no matter how I reinstall the driver or else. (I use a CF Card reader plug into the USB port)
2) Win98 can recognise it but need at least 20 second to a mins, sometime it goes hang straight once i insert it. But I do not have any problem for my SanDisk Ultra 256MB or an earlier version Sandisk.
Therefore, I would like to know anyone have any problems for the Transcend 512MB 30x CF cards??? Coz the price is very tempting since Sandisk Ultra 512MB is selling ard $310. Other things like 5 years warranty... is it Transcend warranty or shop warranty.... coz not many CF card have warranty... i got my SanDisk Ultra they only give me 14 days warranty...??? please advise!

Am just sharing info only.
I'm using 512 OEM ones (solutions), Ridata (20x) and Hagiwara(?x). They all cost around S$230/240 - 270 each at the time i got them. All are ok for my XP notebook, XP & 98 PC. When transfering data on the PC, I use a 6in1 USB thingy. For the notebook, it is through the PCMCIA slot. All CF cards are from AP.
So far, all transfers are ok, no problems.
Only had problems with the Transcend 512MB, 30x/32x, lost on an average 1-3 images per card and am not using them anymore.
As for Scandisk, i hear that it is slow so have not tried them at all. The 1GB should about 400+.

Anyone have any compatibility issue on the Win2K machine for those CF brand (solutions, Ridata (20x) and Hagiwara) which Dagger mention coz I'm running on this OS...

I'm using Transcend 512 30X. (X = 150kb/sec) Read/Write speed is quite fast! 4.5mb/sec if im not wrong. SandDisk ultra is only 16X
I dont see any issue on the OS if you'll use CF card reader.

I've used CF for the past 5 years, starting with a SandDisk. Currently, I'm using 2xHagiwara 256MB and 1x Transcend 512 MB 30x. I've heard compatibility with the Hagiwara ones and during the recent IT Show, the Hagiwara could not be read by the Fuji console that was used to print digital images. The person on the console told me that they had problems but I still insisted that they try again. No go. 
The Transcend has no such problem and I've taken quite a few photos (>100) since then. Really fast card, no problem so far. If you have problem with it, 5 year warranty. Throw it back at them and complain...

Personally, I've not encountered problems with Hagiwara (got 3 x 256Mb ones) or NCP (1 x 256Mb, 1 x 128Mb). Though I've lost both my TwinMOS (128s) and my 1 Transcend (256Mb) over the last 15 months. Sigh.
I get my CFs from Sim Lim Sq. Feel that its cheaper there. Recently my colleague is thinking of switching to 512Mb Hagiwara or Sandisk Ultra.
