Just got a bp-511 from East Gear
1500mh

Took about 1hour to change ..is that normal ?
Thought it should be longer.

BTW, the also rent x-drive,etc ..around 10bucks a day. hmm may rent one :)

As with all Lithium-Ion batteries, first time charge better to leave it on longer even though indicator shows full charge. Maybe 8 hrs if you're kiasu.

The first time charge will determine the life span/max cycles of your battery.

The new Li-Ion battery is not at 0% charge when it gets to you, optimum storage is 40% and the batt probably has that amount of charge.

You should never ever overcharge a Li-Ion battery, and the built-in protection circuitry in the batt will prevent it anyhow. There's little truth behind the "first time charge" theory, as Li-Ion batteries have zero memory effect.

I noticed:

Canon original is 1100mh 7.4V
Eastgear is 1500mh BUT 7.2V

Hmmm ... what does this mean ?

It means nothing really. On a full charge, the battery's potential difference is actually around 8.30V (the battery then proceeds to discharge across an entire range of voltage under load). To a layman, the voltage numbers don't mean much, the mAh ratings are more significant though, the higher the better of course.

I see. Thanks for clearing this up.

Everytime I've bought a new product with Li-Io batteries, I've always been told to 'over charge' for the lifespan to be optimal.

So only Nickel Metal Hydride or Nickel Metal Cadmium batteries require 'over charging'?

I have little idea where this myth originated from, but a little research will reveal much. Overcharging is never good for any form of rechargeable batteries. For Ni-MH, a good charger will not overcharge the batt, but instead provide a nice trickle current to keep the batt topped up (Ni-MH batts have a high self-discharge rate). The problem with this is that some chargers have a rather high trickle current, and this will adversely affect the performance of the batt over time. Thus it's safest to charge your Ni-MH batts, use them straightaway, or give them a top-up charge before using them if they have to be stored away for prolonged period of time.

Do check out the website, it goes into good detail, at the same time not too technical to comprehend.
