Bottle Tree

Hi dingaroo, by placing the restaurant on the top third horizontally. Doesn't it makes the restaurant smaller in a sense and the focus will be more on the water?

Correct me if i'm wrong. I'm still in the learning stage :(

not really. sometimes water if u use a slower shutter speed and ur stable ground, what u get is a nice soft reflection of the building, depending on light source.

my opinions on this pic.

f5 at iso 800 shutter speed 1/4000s? o.o i'm amazed.

drop ur iso to 100. put ur aperture at f8 or f16. then set ur respective shutter speed. if u got a tripod u dun need worry. u can get nice reflections i think. if still cannot get a GND and u can use even longer shutter speeds. hope it helps a lil.;)

wahoooo.. eyes that was so so much difference.. hw u do that?!! I'm so amazed..

Thanks Bro. Will take note of that. broad daylight if my position is stable ISO that low will it still cause any blurr to the photo? I know the most stable way is to have a tripod.

If you want to shoot such non-moving objects (like landscape), when using tripod, you can turn off your VR/IS. Also note that, regardless of whether of day or night, use the lowest ISO so that you wouldn't get noise in the picture.

Cheers!

VR/IS will still vibrate before shoot ar? I mean half click down before u shld motor shld be in position n not moving le right? that is i mean technically speaking..

depending on different ppl. good handhold can be 1/100. but I usually just get tripod:) din think will blur at these speeds

One question. If i wish to take photos like what eyes have posted.

Is it possible? If so what will be the rough setting for it? Or the only way is do it during PP?

I wouldn't bother with a tripod unless shooting at sundown or when attempting a long exposure (1s+) with an ND filter, Unless you can't help it, avoid tripods at all costs since they weigh you down and restrict your ability to view a scene at different angles (yes, I mean it although I'm generally a landscape shooter who uses tripods most of the time).

1. In what area is critique to be sought?
- Composition, Exposure and focus

2. What one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
- Clear photo of objects, not over exposed

3. Under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
- Took this while attention a family day function organized by company early in the morning

4. What the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
- Think a bit under expose

Picture was cropped slightly and the rest remains the same as taken.

C&C welcomed.
I think the biggest flaw with your picture is the composition. This looks like nothing more than a snapshot with many distracting elements in it. The more elements in the image you have, the worse it is unless you are able to make several elements blend together in harmony.

1: Messy reflections.
2: Fence-like thingy in the background.
3: Orange life buoys stick out like sore thumbs.
I'm pretty sure I can name another few if you want.

Even though eyes added more saturation and contrast, the image still has a weak impact (if any at all) on the viewer. The easiest way to determine the quality of the picture - Will the image suck the viewer into the scene? Or will it simply just be another photo for a viewer to flip through? Good images make you go "WOW!" and stare dumbstruck at them for a few seconds.

Go have a look at some of the works of the best photographers on CS: night86mare, TungTong, Soulfly7 and kit. I think I might have some nice examples of composition too on my flickr. Learning from your mistakes is good but also having a look at good images may inspire you or help you learn how to make a good composition.

I agree that I still have a lot more to learn. The picture is clutter with a lot of things and it becomes messy. Now you mention, I realized how bad it is when I start comparing my picture with others. :(

:bsmilie: i like to lug tripods when i go overseas ironically. not in sg though:think: always find it handy to get 1 tripod. use to shoot landscapes, else use to whack ppl trying to steal camera:sweat:

and if ur tripod has a water level tool, its also quite useful when trying to adjust so ur camera is stable. vr/is sometimes will go gooyak when ur using tripods so we usually off them.

and abuse ur liveview if u have. use it to zoom in a lot, then focus for sharp photos

1.) uninteresting composition.
2.) Image seems to suffer from low contrast.
3.) Every component in the image is screaming for attention but non of them are outstanding.

Most comments and advice are true and sincere, though some may carry different opinion and apply different technique, and that's what photography is.

As for skylover...he is going thro the " teething period " just like a toddler..chew anything within reach and shoot anything within range. Soon, he will get over it and be more stable ( provided he continues to learn, and apply the advices given ).

After a hard look, finding is...any form of composition, cropping, contrast and saturation manipuliation will unable to help, as one put up...there are just too many clutters and objects.

so, I would say.. a nite / evening shot may have a different appeal, if done correctly. Of coz, tripod, long exposure are a must. Perhaps..HDR too.

dun think i'll suggest hdr though:sweat: sky nt too interesting, sea looks boring too. hdr to bring out an empty sky and empty ocean looks boring. but i think as u mentioned, perhaps sunset/night +hdr will really wow all of us.;) i can imagine the bluish tinge of the sky + moonlit water with reflection alraedy

this looks better, but it doesn't fixed the flawed composition.

go back there at like sunset and retake the picture if you can. Use rules of thirds ;)

With the warm tungsten lighting inside the restaurant area and some lamp post will contrast the bluish sky nicely.

FYI, the use of HDR is just another trick one can use but it cannot save a poor composition. Composition grows on you and isn't something you can learn. Just shoot more and ask for critique, you will learn alot here :)

I see that HDR, long exposure and sunset/sunrise is strongly favoured recommended, but these are not the normal shot any of us take most of the time. The best shots are usually what we come across unplanned, like a memorable scene, actions, etc. Keep using the camera and it will become like an instinct for good composition and settings. If you keep trying to use with tripod, it will restrict your skills.

There're many types of photography including documentary. If Skylover is documenting what a bottle tree looks like or trying to use a picture to point to a stranger where the restaurant is, will anyone still recommend him to shoot in some artsy fartsy way? Why hasn't anyone even ask him his intent before dishing out recommendations?

Assuming the TS had read the : pls read before posting...subtitle ; posting tips.
