Just want to ask...

1) if I want a simple white border about my photos, could I simply increase the canvas size by 1 inch about the photo?

2) Will that increase in canvas size be captured when the photo is sent to the printer's?

3) And is 1 inch enough?

4) Must I tell the photo lab that my photos have borders?

Thanks a lot!

No, you will change the ratio of the print size, eg 4" by 6 " will become 6" by 8", and it no more 2:3, if you print it on 4R paper, the borders will have different thickness.

2) Will that increase in canvas size be captured when the photo is sent to the printer's?
Yes, if the file is flatten and save, and you send the file for print.

3) And is 1 inch enough?
depend on what size paper you print, and you personal preference.

4) Must I tell the photo lab that my photos have borders?
It depends, by default all prints will be print without borders, because they charge extra for borders.
But some people always order print with borders, than have to instruct them not to print with borders for this lot.

Hi,

Thanks! I saw the thread in Digital Darkroom but didn't think that what I did amounted to the same thing... silly me...:embrass:

Looks like I have to do an action and apply it to all photos... I have like 2000 shots to add borders to... anyone knows a lab that does prints good and cheap and are willing to do borders? My KM photo lab in Clementi Ave 3 refuses to do borders apparently... although they charge only like 20 cents per copy of 4R...

And now I have to remove all the borders on about 128 shots that I have processed...

Tried it, works like a charm but isn't the border rather thick??? Would it appear so thick when sent for print... I really only want about 5mm around my 4R print...

Usual rate of border is 10cents per print,

one thing about self added borders, all you images must be have minmum density and color correction on printer side, else all borders will be in different color tone and shades. and more over, it may not be accurate size on four side, better run some tests before sending the whole lot.

KTDI doesn't charge for borders. Good service too. Just becareful of Michelle :what:

you don't know how to keep original meh?
if you post processed the images, keep it in tiff file, write a action to add borders and save a jpg file for printing can liao, leave the tiff file without border untouched, next time you want other size or ratio print shouldn't be any problem.

Got originals... just that they are not post-processed... just very mah fan to have to re-process all those shots again... although it's just a little sharpening, curves and sometimes tilting the photo to get a nice angle...

for address etc can check http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=31715

the sister shop may be nearer your place: http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=144837

price is quite good. if you tell them you're from CS, i think it's something like 30 cents each for 4R. remember to tell them beforehand if you want matt or glossy, and that you want a white border.

if you're in town, can also go to konota or colour lab at adelphi. both of them also can do the white border for you, just slightly more ex than KT.

I saw your post... just that I usually leave it jpeg... must change habit lar... thanks! Guess I will just crop off the borders and then save the file as jpeg... I usually save max (12) on PS... and with a 6.1 MP file, the jpeg compression isn't noticeable at 4R especially when it has been like saved only 2 or 3 times as jpeg...

Thanks for the threads... think I will stick with KT... I know them as well cos they do photos for my school... kekeke... I have like 2000 shots in all to develop... now looking through all of them (including my students)... choosing... very sianz....

Just to check, pai... the added border does not bring extra charge? And another thing is that I like to add captions to my photos... how's the quality of the print out? Cos I am like putting it on a 6MP file but when it gets developed as 4R, will the words be able to be read?? Thanks!

A silly but works method: open the file in PS, set the zoom percentage to match the viewing size to 4R size on monitor. Now you are "what you see is almost what you get"

hope this help.

no extra charge for the borders.

as for the captions, i can't answer for sure. i've put text on top of photos before and it could be read very clearly. but i think you can try catchlight's method to decide how big the text has to be.
