Singapore Food Trail

Singapore Food Trail is the first 1960s-themed food street in Singapore, occupying some 16,000 square feet with more than 800-seat at the Singapore Flyer. It boasts a strong mix of heritage hawkers who (supposedly) represent Singapore's original and most famous hawker foods. The Singapore Food Trail features 12 heritage hawkers, 5 snack kiosks and 3 push carts which include many established names and most have been in the business for 30 to over 50 years. It would be great had Indian rojak, roti prata and Katong Laksa been included.

The oldest stall at the Singapore Food Trail is High Street Tai Wah Pork Noodle (which started in 1939) and other famous stalls listed are Boon Tat Street Barbeque Seafood, Rong Chen Bak Kut Teh, and Alhambra Padang Satay. Unfortunately, most of the stalls are not operated by the original owners or their immediate families but the food is still acceptable/decent but not of high standard. Nevertheless, I like the environment - the open air road-side dining, the push carts/stalls and heritage corner that displays many old stuff, all these are not commonly available in Singapore.

Newton Lim Kee Hokkien Noodles

Not sure whether I was given the wrong order, for $5 that was definitely a very generous serving with lots of sotongs (cuttlefish). It was pretty decent but nothing to shout about – the noodles was a lil over-fried and was not flavorful enough. Oh why was it not served on the opeh leaf?

Top 73+1 Handmade Fishball Noodles

This stall has been around for 20+ years and is famous for its super-size hand-made fish balls. They are ridiculously huge (bigger than ping pong balls ), springy and best of all, no fishy smell. The noodles however, was a disappointment - overcooked & soggy.

Oh I didn't know about the Bishan stall but I have tried the one in Toh Guan Road, the noodles was much better. I guess they have too many stalls now and quality control is the usual problem.

Had the chance to go there when I brought my family to the flyer....initially I thought the food gonna be so-so nia, cos its a tourist spot anyway. Boy was I wrong. The fish ball noodle was excellent, the fishballs are huge and spongy, and taste very good, one of the best I tasted so far. I also tried the oyster omelette which is of high standard too.

For the BBQ stingray, initially I was shocked because the owner told me smallest is $12 one left, but I LL order still. When the stingray came, it was one of the largest $12 portion I have ever eaten in my life, and most importantly, the stingray is damn fresh and got juice inside (if u know what I mean) :)

I was greedy and ordered the Hokkien Mee also, and I nearly have difficulty finishing it. It is comparable to the Thye Hong one, maybe just half a mark below.

Overall, I am pleasantly surprised by this place, and I will recommend anyone working nearby to give it a try.

Now, can somebody confirm the place is open everyday, including lunch time???

Wow wolfton, seem you had a satisfying meal... I have tried all the stalls except Chinatown Popiah and as I have said, the food was ok but not fantastic. I don't mind eating there if I am nearby and I too will recommend this place because it's unique and not for the food.

Yup, the place is open everyday from 10.30am :)

That's why bro Anthony, give it a try and judge for yourself. :)

Oh dear, that bad? I have ordered the bbq fish on more than one occasion and so far, was pretty decent and yeah, the sambal was great. Not much different from what I have had in Lau Pa Sat. Had the ngoh hiang/prawn crackers once but didn't really like it, my boy loves the chicken rice though.

Come on, Simpang Bedok is pretty popular, did you give the right address? hahaha, all shells? ;p

Sin Ming Road Rong Chen Bak Kut Teh

I had frequented the original stall in Sin Ming Road many many times and I love the soup. They serve the Teochew style bak kut teh which has clear, light color soup (mainly garlic & pepper among other ingredients with no soy sauce added).

I was pretty happy with the soup here but the bak kut/pork ribs were not tender enough and had too much fat. Rong Chen is known for using prime ribs and 7" rib loins but hey, I couldn't find it in my bowl!

Oh I have totally different experience with the bak kut teh stall, they were very friendly. The uncle who served me even told me to go back to them if I need to have the soup refilled. Perhaps a bad hair day? :bsmilie:

So which food court were you driven to?
