Roasted Duck Roll (烤鸭夹饼)

Pretty similar to the Beijing roasted duck roll except this one was huge. The sliced duck along with lots of pickles, cucumber, spring onion, chives and bean sprout were wrapped in a large spring roll skin. Plum sauce, sweet and chili sauce were added giving it an extra oomph. It was pretty good - the condiments complemented well with the tender duck meat and the skin which remained crispy, but I found it a little too sourish perhaps due to the (over) generous serving of the pickles.

Tian Bu La (甜不辣)


Tian Bu La literally means ‘sweet not spicy’ and the name is said to be the sound alike of Japanese ‘Tempura’. There’s no agreement as to whether tian bu la originated from this famous Japanese cuisine but the Taiwanese version is definitely more appetizing and flavorful. Some say it resembles Japanese Oden but with more chewy and tougher fish cakes, a tad sweeter and always served with exquisite sauce.

Tian bu la refers to fish paste that has been molded into various shapes and sizes, deep-fried, then boiled in a broth. Before eating, the pieces of solid fish paste are taken out of the broth and smothered in brown sauce. Many vendors are now adding new items such as pig’s blood cake, tofu, meat ball, and radish to the original fish paste to make this dish more attractive. The new version is popularly known as ‘black wheel’.

This was taken from Ah Hui stall which is popular for their mee-suah/mian xian; the sauce was savory and rich, very sweet and melt-in-the-mouth radish but the fish cakes were a lil too soft, not chewy enough.

This humble stall has one of the longest queue in Shilin and is very popular for its juicy, succulent charcoal-grilled meat rolls. It was really delicious ~ the meat was perfectly grilled and went well with the (sweet, juicy) spring onions. At TWD10 (S$0.45) a piece, it is a die-die must try dish!

Deep-sea Squid (深海花枝燒)


I have never enjoyed eating squid/cuttle fish, it's like munching on inedible pieces of rubber. This deep-fried squid however was totally different and a brand new experience ~ the super-size deep-sea squids (深海花枝) were soft, tender yet chewy but not rubbery at all. Funny but they tasted very much like a good quality hand-made fishcake!

Shaved Ice Desserts ~ Xue Hua Bing (雪花冰) and Tsua Bing (剉冰)

With the scorching hot weather in Taipei this legendary dessert is probably the best way to cool down and to quench the thirst and that's what we did - this sweet, refreshing, soothing and cooling dessert was the only food we took every day without fail.

Shaved ice has always been popular here and it has gained immense popularity outside Taiwan in recent years, making it one of her most famous (food) export. It's really a simple dessert of shaved ice but instead of the 'ordinary' ice, condensed milk or other ingredients are mixed with the water before being frozen. This addition and the (special) shaving process results in an ice that is not only flavorful (like ice cream) but also more fluffy, hence the name Snow Flake Ice (雪花冰).

Another variation is 'tsua-bing' (剉冰) - shaved ice with a variety of toppings like assorted fruits, taro, red bean, grass jelly, sweet potato, mug bean, corn, etc. These 2 names are sometimes interchangeable and the later is more commonly used. Shaved ice is available almost everywhere in Taipei but the one not to be missed is at No.15 Yongkang St, just around the corner from the original Ding Tai Fung. This shop is super-famous for its mango shaved-ice and despite operating under a new management/owner, the quality is maintained.

TAIPEI FOOD-COURTS



Like Singapore, there is no shortage of food-courts in Taipei since most shopping malls have one or two somewhere within the building. These food-courts are really great place to hunt for food and be prepared to be spoilt for choice and have a headache of what to order. Most importantly, the food are great value for money even in those high-end shopping malls.

Most food-stalls provide set-meals with very generous (read: HUGE) serving and cost anything from S$3-S$7, usually no more than S$10. The bigger food-courts (like in Taipei 101 and Main Railway Station) have different sections (themes) providing different types of delicacies ~ from famous street hawkers, southern Taiwan cuisines to Italian or Japanese food.

If you find munching away in the super-packed night markets challenging and prefer to dine in the comfort of air-conditioned environment, food-courts are definitely great alternative.


The following 2 set meals were taken in a basement food-court in Taipei 101.

LOUISIANA FISH FILLET WITH PYRAMID RICE (TWD179/S$7.50)
Taken from a stall run by the caterer of Kaohsiung Airport. Love the fish; crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside but the rice was a lil too wet, kinda sticky.

Wu Xiang (Five Spice) Drumstick Rice set

百年吳家 (Century old Wu's Family) is a popular name and has many outlets through-out Taipei. One of the oldest food franchise, it has been in the business since 1919. This rice set cost a mere TWD120 (S$5) - the deep fried drumstick, albeit a lil oily was flavorful and juicy. The tofu (bean curd) was perfect and yummilicious!

This is one of the specialty dish from Tainan and is usually presented in a small bowl as snack. Served in clear broth, the yellow noodles (or mixture of wheat and rice noodles) are topped with minced braised pork, shrimp, roasted garlic, marinated boiled egg, meat ball, bean sprouts and garnished with chopped spring onions.

Cookie Pasta

We simply love this innovative, unique way of enjoying pasta by using wafer bowl as container. It was very refreshing - the sweet, crunchy wafer plus the thick, flavorful pasta and the salty bacon was a perfect combination. Served with garden salad, this bacon pasta set cost TWD109 ($4).

Wooden Cask/Pot BBQ (木桶燒)

It's something new to us, the food are served on sizzling hot plates placed on top of wooden casks and they looked really appetizing. It took us quite a while to decide what to order from the wide variety of items available; from the super-size cuttle fish to the more common chicken steak and bbq pork.

The presentation was kinda messy due to the huge servings but the food was one of the best (teppanyaki) we have ever had, especially the deep-fried cherry prawns which were juicy and really sweet.

Western Food


Housed in a coffee shop next to Hougang Plaza, this corner stall is one of my family's favorite place for western food. A pretty popular stall serving hassle-free and inexpensive nice food, 5 Star Corner Western Food is always full with activity. It is also unique as it is operated by a group of 20s ah-beng look young men but no cause for concern, they are friendlier than they look. Most of the time food are served within 15 mins after placing the order (with the statue like, boh-chap shiny-hair ah beng).

We love the crispy and yet juicy fish and chip, the black pepper steak which is served on a sizzling hotplate is pretty good too. The black pepper lamb however, is kinda inconsistent and really depends on 'luck' - it's great if the lamb served are those without too much fat. Our experience with this stall has always been satisfactory, not so much with the service but the quality of the food is good.
