Blur Images 14-42 x on GX1

Yes, I was disappointed cos as mentioned, my settings so far have been either on P or IA modes. So I assumed the camera would do its adjustments automatically (idiot proof) without any manual intervention on shutter speeds or ISO. The slow SS of 1/6 and 1/8 were not my doing but the GX1... but I am not blaming the camera !!! :)

Might be settings like slow shutter limit, ISO limit etc that is causing the camera to work to a certain setting

Settling down after christmas, new year and lunar new year with lots of trial shots with the GX1... I have the 14-42x, 45-170x and 100-300 lenses (and 14 prime). Whilst all the other lenses have given bright, crisp and sharp results even at maximum zoom, I am most disappointed with the 14-42 x power zoom lens...

Most photos with the 14-42x were taken on IA or P mode and they were typical people shots... lo hei, group shots etc... many of the shots ended up blur or with blur images of people... whilst objects remained fairly sharp, sometimes the entire picture was movement blur.

Anyone has issues like this? Or suggestions to help correct this frustration? I used to be a Canon 60D user with L lenses... crystal sharp every shot.

From ur description alone, its very obvious that the shutter speed is too slow. You need to shoot at 1/100 s which is wat is recommended for people who are not posing for you. Thus u hv to tweak your iso and aperture to get the right exposure. Sometimes flash will be needed.

Perhaps going for a basic course in photography will do TS good. Whether self study or actual course does not matter.

OK... now I do justice to the 14-42 x lens... taken about 6.45pm no post-edit...

you have to understand, even if you are as steady as a tripod, motion blur depends on the subject, you can't expect to shoot with same setting as a standing portrait shot with someone who is cycling or on a moving bike, car, train, F1. Your surrounding may be in focus but motion blur is motion blur.

Yup . I uploaded the last 2 pics cos I have corrected my settings etc so I am now getting steady shots with motion blur as I would like them. I had promised to upload better shots after all the feedback so this is it !

Thanks again.

PS - I love street shots - this dragon dance was going on at Changi Village whilst I was there for dinner so the GX1 came in handy.

I think your pic can be vastly improved with a change in some of your picture settings as well.
With 14-42x f3.5 any shots taken in house and after 6pm when out in the open should be taken with flash to avoid blurs.
Like other bros said as well, get a fast prime would be the best option if you prefer to shoot without flash most of the time. (eg. Lumix 50mm f1.7 or 14mm f2.5)

Good advice! I second that. I dun believe in natural light when it is bad or inadequate. Learn to use flash.

I have a friend who did wedding/fashion photography and was amazed by his stunning pictures.
Later I asked him about lighting and he told me that he has given up on flash for on-location shoot and is using "continuous light" only.
However these are not cheap nor practical for mere mortals. You will need assistant ONLY to handle the lights. Another will handle batteries (for outdoor shoot). They take time to setup.

I also dont like to use flash.
So what are the continuous light available for us then?

1. turn on all the lights in the house.
2. make subject stand under the light source.
3. make subject stand with dimmer background (compared to their face/clothes) - also NEVER shoot backlight.
4. Outdoor shoot, get an assistant who can hold torchlight aiming at the model face, take a face shot with custom white balance, save it and shoot the rest using that setting.

You mean led panels like this?
Litepanels | LED Lighting for the Film and Television Industry

It comes in various shapes and sizes.

Hi,

I just own a GX1, still a beginner. The photo shot i taken is also blur like the owner posted. How to get a clear photo without a flash? can advise on that? some more, in gx1, how to determine the shutter speed for example 1/100 or 1/60 and etc... in gx1, i only saw 1",30, 60, ..... without the ratio. Sorry, i'm still new. ><

Did u try the manual?

Good because without the eye piece it is quite hard to keep still. Actually it is easier to hold the regular DSLR. I hold my Nikon very well at slow speed. Normally I take a deep breath then hold and press the shutter button but the real advantage is that my spectacle is supporting part of the weight thru the eye piece. Haha all the old timers know that we have to do breath control before a shot for a very simple reason, every shot is expensive on film.

i learn the holding breath technique when i went for sniper course :D

I am not being mean, but you ought to start reading the manual and go take a basic photography course or read up some basic photography materials. Know your Aperture / Shutter Speed / ISO / White Balance / Focusing / Metering.
