BEWARE! Fake Olympus Battery BLN-1 surfaces in SGP (Pics)

2 "chiong" buy 1 original ....... :)

The chiong one is a 3rd party which is fine since it's not a misrepresentation. 3rd parties (referring to batteries haha) are fine so long as it's made clear to the buyer.

3rd party batteries aren't fake :) fake is when it's not original but trying to be original (woah ... Rare instance where I sound philosophical )

Not sure what the CSer represented to the TS, i.e. third party or original batteries. It would be really distasteful if the TS bought an 'original' battery, notwithstanding the fact that the deal price may have been rock bottom.

My Olympus battery which comes with the kit is similar to the one on the left, i.e. 1830mA, 8.76V, and further processed in Indonesia .... 2013-06-12BA.

But I have a "chiong" one with no brand obtained from Alan Photo. Instead of 7.6V 1220mAh, it reads 7.4V 2800mAh .... both works well. And I just came back from snowing conditions ......

i also bought a 3rd party batt with same specs 7.4V 2800mAh - the shop did not have the original batt and i needed an extra batt urgently.... turned out the 3rd party one couldn't last 1/2 as long as the original one. i paid for what i got.... it was 1/2 the price of the original, and 1/2 the capacity haha

If we hold a 'spot the difference' competition , confirm sure wipe the floor with the opponent :)

Suggest making this a sticky since the tell tale factors have been shared so clearly & the fakes will only increase in qty.

First time coming across a fake BLN-1 , sigh.

Thread has been made a sticky.

It does not matter that the seller represented to the TS, and it doesn't matter what price it is sold at. As long as the battery has Olympus markings, and if it turns out to be a fake, it is already against the law.

Third party is alright, as it does not mislead the buyer into thinking it's an Original. But branding it as an Original item is a big NO

Spelling error? Yes.
Fake? Don't think so..
As I've got a BLS-1 from EPM1 kit bought in 2012 IT Show..
Explode being spelled as explose...
Up till now the batt still going strong..

daredevil,

I would hesitate to make it a sticky, especially with the title modified to give the impression that the battery is fake.
The battery has not been confirmed fake by Olympus, and I am awaiting their reply after posting on their FB page.

I have contacted the seller, and he has agreed to give me a refund if it is indeed a fake, as it was a gift to him and he didn't know any better.
Let's not take out the pitchforks or point fingers for now.

Cheers

From my experience in my years in contract manufacturing in China, I am 99.99% sure this is a fake.

Please update us asap. In the meantime I will leave it up here as a sticky as it serves as a good warning for folks to be careful.

why would someone fake a battery that is lower rating? Logically they would fake it with same or higher rating isn't it?
I am thinking it could be a cheaper model using lower grade cells for country with lower purchasing power to sell at lower price.

I realise battery made from Vietnam all spell explose instead of explode.
Btw, mine looks a bit different. Anyone know is it real or fake?

The capacity rating is the same. The max charge current rating is different. 2 different things.

Might be for a different market, since the text is in french and not chinese. And for yours, at least the UL logo is proper.

And it seems, even the original ones processed in vietnam (2012) also carry the same spelling error of "explose". The ones processed in indonesia seems to be a newer batch (2013).

To be sure, ask Olympus.

Post a picture of your battery. Does your UL logo look like the right one that TS posted?

It is a combination of errors that shows that the battery is most probably a fake. Spelling errors happen from time to time, but when there are so many discrepancies, including a use of a obviously fake logo of a certification agency, you can be sure it is a fake.

that's what I was referring to. the charge rating.

They will lie about the capacity, but max charge rating is not capacity, it is the maximum charging current the battery can take when being charged. Because if they lie about the max charging current a battery can take, it can get very dangerous. They at least have a little conscience.

BTW, do you really think a company such as olympus will actually produce "a cheaper model using lower grade cells for country with lower purchasing power to sell at lower price"? That makes totally no sense actually, when the bulk of the price/cost is in the camera not the battery. We are not talking about necessities like rice or cooking oil here. This is a battery for a much much more expensive photographic equipment.

let's see the reply from olympus.

Still awaiting their reply - maybe they're on Christmas hols also..

Seems like 2 batteries i got from cam; BLS-5 for E-pm1 & BLN-1 for OMD E-M5 had spelling errors.. "Explose"... But as long as it works and stay strong.. It'll be fine..
