Best way to prepare pic for large format print?

Just to check guys: I've shot a pic using RAW, edited it and converted it to TIFF. The original pic size is 8MB, but the TIFF is 44MB. Is this normal?

My other question will be: is the TIFF file suitable for printing on a poster for a large wall?
