Hi,

I am a newbie in video software. I have capture the video from dv to PC and burn to DVD, but the video quality is very disappointing when comparing direct viewing from the camcorder.

My question is:

1. What is the best software available (in terms in video quality) among the competition as editing bells and whistles are not too important to me.

Thanks

Johnny.

I don't think the problem lies in the editing software. More likely, its the DVD conversion software and the codec it uses. What software and settings are you using to convert to DVD and how long is the footage?

I'm using Windows Movie Maker , the conversion was 1 to 1, meaning 1 hour for 1 hour.

Hi Johnny. Not sure what you mean by 1 to 1. Anyway, the most important factor in the conversion is the bitrate for the MPEG2 encoding. If you set this to 7 or 8 Mbps CBR you should get great results. (You won't need VBR unless you have longer than 90 minutes or so per DVD.)

I'm capturing to avi format. Is it the best digital format?

I have try transfer the video to dvd recorder via s-video, the picture quality is better and it is analog, I thought digital transfer is better? Of course I could not do editing.

When you say you are capturing to avi format, can you please provide a bit more detail of how you are doing it? e.g. how is the cam connected to the PC, and what software are you using for the capture? Thanks.

HI,

I am using Firewire to PC, Window Movie Maker , setting at HQ 4:3 best quality to capture.

Is there a setting called DV-AVI or something similar? You need to select the DV codec otherwise the video will get recompressed.

Windows Movie Maker is good for WMV and streaming output. Good conversion need Ulead Media Studio to get what you need.

note that the avi that you uploaded using windows movie maker may not be able to be edited with Adobe Premiere Pro....

Try looking at this thread. So far pinnacle studio is quite good for consumer use. The high ends ones are Sony Vegas, Final Cut Pro, Avid Pro etc. But I dun encourage Ulead as the CODEC is pretty poor - the video quality is not as good as the rest.

Windows moviemaker is more complament to their wmv format so quality basics poor so my suggestion is to get adobe premiere which captures in raw footage like avi instead of being capture in wmv.
