Best practices - Lens changing

i usualy wash them under the tap after heavy usage or the least clean with a cloth after blowing

I suppose you wash the bag and not the lenses.

Anyway, I do left my lens with hood and w/o front caps in the bag but the front is facing down..

I love to have my hood on (not reversed) and lens cap off too, when I put the lens into the pouch. But so difficult... Either the hood is too big for the pouch, or the lens too long. Until today i still can't find a pouch (for my belt system) that can store a 70-200mm f/2.8 with hood mounted facing down...
Does any one have any suggestion so that I won't drop my lens?

to me,
i am always concern on whether my cam is facing downwards when its unmounted.
cos i hate it when dust gets inside. so i tend to kanchiong when changing lens. :sweatsm:

After reading all the posts, somehow I get the feeling that I am quite bo chap.
Firstly, I almost never turn off my camera before changing lenses.
Secondly, I do find myself changing lenses, even before I mount a pony, in the midst of a sandy plain. I just face the lens mount of my camera body flat against my body, then when ready, i will quick plug the lens in.
Sometimes I think I am asking for trouble.
But I guess time may change things, for a young man like me...hopefully.

Try crumpler bags? I just put the whole thing, EFS55-250 mounted on camera (with hood in shooting orientation) into the bag. Everything fits nicely, facing down. 70-200F2.8 is probably much bigger, maybe can fit sideways or use a larger sized bag.

pentax cam can do this easier since the release button is on the right instead of the left...

Pancake primes makes handling easier too. Can hold two lenses with one hand.

then again, i haven't touched a pancake prime before.

for me its usually not much a big deal changing lenses...

i always let the camera dangle from neck when changing lenses so i have 2 hands free.

prepare unmounted lens in right hand, remove rear cap and stuff in pocket.

then in one fluid motion unmount mounted lens with left and then right hand unmounted lens slot onto camera.

rear cap onto the now unmounted lens and stuff into bag.

in all maybe 5-8 secs, depending on how quick i remove the desired lens from bag.

front lens cap optional and depends on circumstances.

FIVE

1 holding camera
1 holding camera bag below the camera
1 press lens release button
1 dismount the lens from camera body
1 mounting the replacement lens onto the camera

2) get len A rear cap ready
3) len pointin to ground, remove len A, jus put rear cap on len A.
4) mount len B
5) tighten rear cap on len A.

I change my lens. Your approach needs two lens caps, one more piece that can drop down.

in case i drop or anything happen, at least i hv a spare

you should always mount asap... keeping the interior of your camera clean is more critical than the rear element of your lenses.

lens "A" mounted on camera, wish to change to lens "B"

Put on front lens cap on lens "A"
take out lens "B", place on solid surface, lens face down, loosen rear lens cap
dismount lens "A" from body,
place lens "A" next to lens "B",
take the rear lens cap from lens "B", cap it on lens "A", tighten
take up lens "B", mount on camera,
keep lens "A" into bag or put in safe place,
remove from lens cap from lens "B" and keep it,

done

it will be a good practice while doing this,camera must face down to avoid dust getting thru the opening

mount back the lens should be the 1st step and not fitting on the rear cap on lens A.

your gaping camera body is wide open while u fit on the rear cap.

in fact, you should seamlessly remove and fit on at the same time, minimize the amount of time your body is left open.
