agape01 said:Still the bottom line is how much are you willing to spend on the lens that you desire.
Terence said:How's that the bottom line? I did think about that for a minute but within any given price range, there are always different models from different manufacturers to choose from. Price is not the definitive bottom line, sure it's a consideration but there are other factors to consider such as what I listed in my post.
Terence said:Switching lenses on the fly takes a bit of practice but I don't think it's that hard to get used to. It's easier to handle a small prime than a larger zoom. The other option is to shoot with 2 bodies, it's obviously an expensive choice but it does open up new opportunities to you.
birefringence said:Thanks again, Terence. Two bodies will come ... need to wait some more... X'mas is abt 6 mths away :bsmilie:
On hindsight, I think it is likely that I will go for the 50/1.4 as a launching pad... since 85 is already embedded into my 70-200 and might be redundant.![]()
kelccm said:How about getting a prime lense like the EF 50mm f1.4?? Since you just need to cover 40 - 70mm range, the 50mm prime would be able to fit your needs. You can always use your feet to do the zooming. In return you'll get excellent quality that can beat the L lenses, and a very fast f stop. Most probably you will be using your 17-40L on your 10D most often, and the 70-200L for your telephoto, the 50mm can be used to fill in that small little gap. If I'm not wrong the 50mm f1.4 should be around the same cost as the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. Also you can achieve bokeh that you can't get from any zoom lenses of similar range. Think about it. Save cost, save weight, excellent quality, fast lense
xl1 said:get 50mm instead of zoom, 40mm to 50mm is not much noticable same from 70mm to 50mm, can just step down/up with your leg.
50mm prime can give you bigger apperture compare with zoom, small, & easy to carry.
enghong17 said:Ha, exectly what i do, use the 50mm, only mine's only 1.8. I don't even carry my 28-70mm out nowadays.
birefringence, thot of going 2nd hand? The 28-70mm F2.8L is like only 1+k, half the price of the 24-70mm is you do need a zoom. Other than that get a tamron. Don't get the sigmas, the coating does have a tendency to come off after a few years. The Tokinas are kinda heavy though built like a rock.

mpenza said:actually, the range 24-75 might not be that important given that you already have 17-40 and 70-200. I've covered weddings with just a 10-22 and the results are pretty ok.
Firefox said:It's not that difficult to work with primes... A smallish beltpack with 3 additional lense pouches by the side and you're more or less settled...
Personally saving up for 24/ 2.8 & 85/ 1.8.. 35L in the not-so-near-future... LOL.. Currently surviving on 35mm Flektogon & 135mm Sonnar.. Covers most of my needs.. Heh..
Snowcrash said:2 questions
1) how long have you been using your 17-40 and 70-200?
2) do you intend to bring all 3 lenses out?
Know the limitations of the range of your lens as well as the weight one can handle will influence one's choice of equipment.

Where can get 2nd hd for 1+K? Yeap, dun mind 2nd hand as long as it is still working... I only want to use this lens for portrait. I already have 17-40 for landscape etc.
enghong17 said:Hi birefringence,
The 28-70mm pops up now and then on B&S. You may wanna do a search or post a WTB. Think USM is selling a piece now.
