best lens for Canon 550D

my budget about 3k for lens,so u mean 24-105mm F4L better?but i am not using FF

now you mention your budget which is very helpful.

but U didnt say what do you have now.

There is few thing to consider.

Do you intend to upgrade to FF?

if yes, best to consider buying FF lens, especially when you are buying expensive lens.

Yes I do agree that you can always post to sell away the expensive lens but why go through the lost?

For future proof lenses,

Ultra wide,
Sigma 12-24mm

Wide angle lens,
Canon 16-35mm or 17-40mm

Standard zoom
24-70mm or 24-105mm

Tele zoom lens
70-200mm F4IS or F2.8IS (depending on you budget)

Prime
Good to start with Canon 50 F1.8

above are all usable on FF camera but I think it shd exceed your budget if collect all.

if not going to FF and you are serious about it, do consider the following,

Ultra wide lens (good to have)
Sigma 8-16mm
Canon 10-22mm
Sigma 10-20mm
Tokina 12-24mm
... and so on.

I consider Sigma 8-16 is one of the best to consider now, however there is no front thread.

Standard Zoom lens,
Got some money to spare, go for Canon 17-55 F2.8
on Budget, go for tamron 17-50 F2.8

If 17mm is wide enough for you, then skip Ultra wide lens for now. Tamron is definitely a good alternative for 17-55

Telezoom
EFS 55-250 IS (cheap and good)
or 70-200 F4L IS

Just start with cheaper version or lend from a friend to see if you really need such a long reach...

Prime lens,
just get a 50F1.8

it look cheap in built who care if it produce decent quality? If you are not a prime lens person, at least u wun lose much...

If got more money to spend on Prime lens, go for Sigma 50F1.4

U want best lens???
There quite a few, like below,

Canon EF 50mm F1.2L $2899,
35mm F1.4L $2599,
24-70mm F2.8L $2699,
24-105mm F4L $2199,
85mm F1.2L $4399,
14mm F2.8L $4199,
24mm F2.8L $3399

Above list, all are very good lens, of there is even more.

24-105mm F4L should be the cheapest. what are your budget??

BTW the prce above are only Canon RPP, so u shd get it cheaper at other shop.

I think this price is wrong. HAHA, 24 f1.4 L II is cheaper than that

If shooting landscape go for 'L' lens. The 'L' lenses are for landscape shooters and thus the designation L.

For street shooting go for EF-S lenses. These lenses are optically designed and corrected for street shooting. And thus the 'S' designation.

:o

sure or not?? i'm no expert and i just started photography 2 months ago, and i am new to all these lenses and stuff.. but i think the L in canon L lenses stand for Luxury.. and the S in EF-S stand for Short back focus and they can only be used in cropped bodies...

what do you think? does it make sense in the first place?

sorry i dun get your meaning.. too deep for me liao.. i'm a simple person..

Im just trying to make it look silly that lens be classified as being best used for this and for that.

If you want to look at a piece of equipment, i suggest you look at it by how it will expand the technical side of your photography. Meaning, if you already have a kit lens and would prefer to shoot better in ambient light and have shallower Depth of Field, then you can look at the faster lenses with bigger aperture. There is no best lens for anything. I shoot with a kit lens for clients before, and used a 50mm 1.8 for clients before, and also L lenses and on noisy Olympus cameras before. You just have to visualise the images that you want, and if your current setup is limiting you, then you can look to make another purchase.

And expensive lens do not mean that they are the best. What is best is very subjective. When i go on shooting streets i certainly do not want to go about bringing my 30d with batt grip and L lens. I go for a smaller 'Lousier' gear that i feel lets me do a better job...

I hope i am much clearer now.

but buy L lens for crop body a bit wasted leh....

Hey i was being sarcastic with that post. I use a 30d and primarily use the 17-40 for my assignments. I like the constant aperture, the build and most of all the USM. I am shooting on film too so its a versatile lens for me. Its rubbish to think that its wasted buying an L lens for a crop body but its always good to know your EF-s alternatives....

As I always said, learn to crawl before you even try to fly.

landscape?
15-85mm
is 15mm enough for you?
if not....UWA is ur preference.

tok 11-16
sig 8-16,10-20,12-24

if u take a look on some of photography magazine
thy also use 3rd party lens...

hi,thanks for ur reply, actually i just got the body gift from friend, some people recommend 17-55,wht do you thinks?

Ok la... Let me share what lens am I using. I am a cheapo person, can't afford L lens. But I am very happy with what I have.

Recommend is 1 thing, ur own expectation and capabilities is another thing.

My expectation in quality and capability of affordability is as follow.

7D- give me what I need in my cam body. Of cuz, if I can afford ff, I will go for it as additional

Lens, sigma 12-24 for wide angle, sigma 24-70 hsm f2.8 (not the older version) for standard

Canon 55-250 is the lens or range which I can live without.

Canon 50f1.8 for portrait (eventually will change to sigma 50 f1.4) and tamron 180mm for macro.

I prefer future proof as I see myself getting a ff body in the future. That why i prefer to buy lenses which is for FF

This is not true:nono: is the 800mm f5.6L designed for landscape shooters?

A tokina 11-16mm f2.8 is not a L lens is it?

I dun like to ask which lens to recommend actually, fan boy will say what they support.

When I know I need the range, I source and see the pro and con. For eg, before I buy sigma 24-70mm f2.8 ex hsm, what did I check...

I see picture output, see what ppl say abt this and others with the similar range. Price vs spec(quality)

I see is it worth to be another fan boy who only buy the 1st party lens.

I must say I have no regret on the lens I own now.

24-70 is my favorite now. Weight, IQ, PRice, speed make sense for me.

I must say, understand your own need, afterall u pay for what u buy not others. If u really need recommadation, see my 1st reply(post 2)

Please read with sarcasm. and 800mm can be used as landscape depending on which way you use it.
