How about canon ixus 850IS? Is it still in production?

I too recommend the Canon IXUS 80IS.

Considering getting Sony W170? 10.1MP camera with image stabiliser, smile detection, exposure compensation. 5X optical zoom. Wide angle lens i think 27mm.

Noise still quite ok.

i just bought Pana FS3 for someone else, and i was playing with it for couple of days.

i'm quite impressed by it! the camera is really responsive to its features, and pic quality comes out is really good. marco is damm good.

OIS, IA all working well in this camera. even i zoom out to the furthest and take pics handheld, no noise. (well, tats because it goes down to 3MP)

even took video clips of concerts in dim lights. its clear enough to see. of couse, cannot video cam quality. but its good to playback.

now this is the one tat is worth its money, and its definitely less than $300.

highly recommend this cam for its price.

i actually bought it for $219 only, with no freebies. Just the body, original battery, charger and cables. Brand new of course.

I second the Panasonic Lumix FS-3. It's a great camera, although it's a pretty ordinary camera. Widest end is 35mm (35mm film standard), and it's a little lacking in the mega-pixels department against the convention, although most of us will probably know that mega-pixels aren't horribly important in a compact these days.

It's the only Lumix that's made in China though. Not that I have anything against products made in China, but just in case you wanna know.

i realised its indoors shots are bright and clear (background and foreground), so unlike Canon indoors shots. The trick is to disable flash.

made in china.... while i was looking for a camera to get, i realised the only brands tat are made in japan is Canon and Panasonic.

the rest of brands are all made in china, made in indonesia, made in philipines, made in malaysia

Heck, i dun really care where it's made from then.......

If i'm getting another budget camera, i will go for this again.

For canon it really have to depend on the batch... for the same camera model can be made from either Japan or China...

For your "trick", you are actually asking the camera to use a higher shutter speed.

yup a higher shutter speed that might hurt the clarity of the photo:nono:

I got "brand new" old COOLPIX L5 for sale(less than 100pics). Extra 2AA NiMH battery and "un-used" 8GB SD Card. It cant read 8GB but i throw it 2GB for you. Please PM or email me. With case, unfilled warannty and screen protector

well.. a bit ot... but for those who can stretch the budget a bit till about $500, the Panasonic FX520 (or FX500 as it is known in other markets) is a very capable camera! Full manual control, with the common features like Face detection, antishake, considerably wider angle at 25mm, and yet still very portable! =)

Very surprised to see that fx520 is not much mentioned here in CS..

Besides the FS3 i bought recently, i went to buy LZ10 model.

This one is alot better model. same as FX520, got full manual, OIS, IA and the rest of Lumix features. in fact i think this model has alot more features than other Lumix models.

Best thing is it runs on AA batts!!!

Price? i got it for $249 only, brand new of course

been playing with it for 1 week... really not bad!! i can play with full manual, A/S/M when the IA doesnt produce good images

i wonder why CS never talk about this model.....

I'm been thinking of FX520 also.... but was thinking abt paying abt $499 for it.... i can top up abit more for a semi-pro already...

i went for LZ10, cheap and good... its a good training cam for me to understand manual functions, before going for SLR or other advanced models.

Canon A590IS
I paid ~$220 buying from Amazon. (no freebies)
The S'pore deal is ~$360 with useless freebies

This is THE BEST BET for cheap and good.
10MP, Av, Tv, M control. Compact. AA batteries

Only cons (not for me though) are the slow flash recharge and 20fps 640x480 movie mode (which I don't use).
