from this and the 1st and 2nd picture, showing that you are master of lighting!

Hi Ngebor, I think it is easier to see how light falls upon stuff in a B&W picture when the colour is absent, the shapes and tones come out more obviously. Perhaps thats why the results come out more spectacular in the B&W ones.

Wow, very nice series! I especially like that Construction workers pic!

Hi Khowen, Thank you, Just beginning to work on my street photography area, not so skilled and brave enough to pluck up the courage to shoot people in the face yet.

wow fabulous series.

May I ask how you got such nice pictures :) did you go free & easy? How much time did you spend?

Hopefully my beijing pictures for my up coming trip can look half as nice as yours. Liked the falling leaves pic especially.

Hi windo30, I'm currently on exchange here at Tsinghua University from NUS, so I have been here for some time already. The Mongolia trip was done with 2 German friends during the October Chinese National holidays.

beautiful series!! i love them!

Wow! Masterpieces really. I think those bw will look fabulous in prints.

Hi renegade150,Splutter, Thank you I've printed some of them and pasted them on my Tsinghua hostel room already since the printing here is quite affordable!

beijing fruits.jpg

Beijing, WuDaoKou

On the way back to Tsinghua hostel after dinner with friends. Fruit seller lady who has never seen a digital camera before. Very surprised on seeing preview screen. Many fruit sellers adorn the road sides hoping for sales from the student community in that area and also to the locals who commute regularly in this bustling area.

Took this while going to draw cash for my then new Tamron 17-50mm. Significantly cheaper in Beijing than in Singapore. Hassle to be unable to pay with cards in their photography stores at the Ma Lian Dao building.

Nice photos!

btw we are planning the same trip Beijing - Mongolia. Do you have any info on which agent you contacted, and intinerary/budget, etc? thanks!

Hi Tomshen,
I was in Beijing as an exchange student and I made the trip up to Mongolia during the National Holidays in October for 14 days. We contacted no agent and made the planning ourselves. However, in Mongolia we stayed in UBGuesthouse and we arranged a custom trip with the owner(Bobby) and a driver.

The budget was not low as the air ticket to Ulan Bator is high from Beijing, to cut costs we took the land route back from Ulan Bator back into Beijing. The itinerary was a southward turn down from the capital into the Gobi and back up again north from the West side.

all your photos very nice, in particular the camel.

however this picture i find that it looks desaturated and skin tone seems affected. is it intended?
The light blobs on the lamp posts have some light fall off applied or due to other effects, i thought it may look unnatural becos they ain't exactly at the corners, and above them again are the sharp bright light of the buildings, giving some discordance.

just my personal opinions. hope u dun mind.

Thanks for the info. I will discuss with my friends and maybe need more tips from you again :)

Hi zoossh,

Of course I don't mind, otherwise why would I post them here? ;)

You're quite right actually, I didn't like the way it turned out to be. I had aimed for a desaturated look for worn down effect but yet still give it color to showoff the colorful fruits on sale. A sense of wanting the best of both worlds, yes. That attention needed to be emphasised which made me dim the lights with burning and the uneven burning made them become well... uneven!

great wall evening.jpg

One more to share, Simatai Great Wall. When the second batch of snow fell in Beijing 2006.

Hey is the simatai portion of the wall still opened for tourist?

Thought they shut down that portion of the wall from tourism. From jinshanling to simatai....

Did they just shut it down?

Went there last Jun.

How's this for my critique :

I've seen lots of picts of China/ Beijing before. But this is the first time that I WANT to go to China to take photos after seeing yours.

Did they? I didn't walk to Jinshanling but we could see people walking towards that side of it so I guess it was still open in January.

I like this one...it seems it is so out of this world..so quiet/lonely...space..

Yea, Mongolia has an abundance of places like this. It is so peaceful it is out of this world. You can just close your eyes and lie down.

Very nice pics.

Just want to know what were the lens used for these pics, especially this and the camel one.

Thank you! I was using the Nikon 12-24 for these I believe.

Hi nikonrus, thats very kind of you. Do take the chance to visit and spend some time at one location. Depending on the season you go, there are different lighting conditions giving different feelings at different times of the day. :)
