[ BBBBug ] Olympus 45mm /f1.8

You need it for a paid assignment or u just need it for an upcoming event to use?

bought an e-pl2 to take photos for school assignment but realised i want better bokeh. was contemplating on panny 20mm f1.7 but after checking out reviews, hoping to get the m.zuiko 45mm instead. hmm.. maybe prioritising for the assignment but i still want to buy for my own personal use/hobby.

They are different focal lengths for different purposes. The 20mm is the 'normal', the 45mm is a short tele (portraits)while the 14mm is a wide angle (group photos). Your decision will depend on the type of assignment.

Best bokeh is from 50 mm f2 i think. Just get a 4/3 adaptor. 25 f1.4 is pretty good tho. But like zig says if u r shooting events or groups, the 45 mm is not so appropriate. Ur first priority shd be the focal length. Focal length is like the tool. If u need a hammer, u cant use a screwdriver. If u need wide, 20 mm, then u need wide. The bokeh is like the brand. Maybe between a stanley or a china brand

Yes and no.. Depending if the subject is stationary or will it move? I.e. People.

Also, most legacy lenses are not good optically fully wide open, but must be stopped down.

agreed, very difficult for moving object/people. but heck, still more fun and cheaper. :)

Hmm.. :). I have my legacy minolta but I really think I need af. I shoot people so for impromptu shots the oly 45 seems just the right lens.. Just that I'm worried the oly 45 may have some focussing issues during video. Read that on dpr..

by the way, when they say recommended price of $498 are they refering to RRP or price we get from stores?

use adapters cannot auto-focus. i'm lazy. and it's not photography assignments. it's just to support the assignment. i can use the kit lens for everything else but i like what i see on robin wong's (although his skill counts).

The real difference is the focal length. 20mm and 45mm are worlds apart. 45mm won't really work for street, for instance, but may be better for face portraits. Vice versa. Bokeh wise, the 45mm and my 25mm Voigtlander look similar, although the latter is manual focus only.

If you use Oly's MMF1 or MMF2 adapter to mount the 4/3 50/2 on your Pen then you will have AF. Of course this may look more incongrous than mounting the 45/1.8 direct.

$498 is slightly cheaper than USD$399 in amazon, which is good news for us. Maybe $460 street price?

Regardless, price is good. Gonna reserve one right now.

Well, that's the one lens that is missing from the prime line up, a short tele. If they make a long fast tele in the future, then I can retire my 4/3 gear already.
