hello Minimalis

I've also been waiting to get the SD-8A before this thread and am now thinking of the alternatives.....
From the quantum website, there seems to another method to use the quantum battries...

Quote:
Connect a Turbo or Turbo Z Battery to the Nikon SB80 using Turbo Cable CKE. You get ultra fast recycling and all day capacity.

I've not been to the shops to check the price diff...any reason why you didn't consider this option? Price diff? or no stock?

Kinda not inclined to make physical changes to the SB80DX..call me sentimental!! HA :)

Whops...ok should have checked up the website for prices before I posted the last response....

OK quantum turbo battery is approx S$560, but allows the use of the Turbo Cable CKE cost approx S$60.. conversion from USD.

SO aka more expensive.....less invasive...more powerful

SO any other options out there that are less invasive, more powerful and less EX!!! .....:)

Larry, since you are using the SD-8A, what was the recycle time for each flash? I am thinking to buy a new one since I cannot find any second hand.

i'm assuming you mean the little power port below the infra-red light... no it's not the same for all the speedlights. the port shape is different...

e.g. the SD8 battery pack has the rectangular plug to fit SB24 to SB28, but cannot fit SB80DX.

the SD8A battery pack has the new weird circular shape to fit the SB80DX. but that shape can fit the older speedlights as well (SB24 to SB28). which means in tech terms, it's "backward compatible". :D

believe me i know, cos i had to buy a new battery pack for the SB80DX when i got it.... couldn't use my old SD8 anymore.

hehe tks all for the reply, maanged to find the required cable for my lumedyne :) hee hee.

one adv i think quantum n lumedyne have over SB8A is that htey are lead acids whereas SB8A just use normal AAs.
somehow i would think lead acids recycle much faster and have a higher capacity than normal AAs, even if there are 10 of them.

Besides the connection, is there any other difference between the 8 and the 8A? eg. performance, weight, size etc etc

Hi everyone,

just like some of u here, I hv been wanting to get the batt pack for 80Dx too. But just one concern ... for those who hv used one, does the cable connecting the flash to the batt pack hindle u? espeicially when u rotate the cam to portrait?

anyone keen to join force to buy SD-8A? i believe if buy in bulk (aka MO) can be cheaper lar.

:)

it doesn't hinder when rotating in any orientation. :)

oh .. thanks :)

MS Color is cheapest .. $220 w/GST for SD-8A. But that's for 5 units and above though. I thk i m going to get for one most probably b4 this sat.

those who wanna buy together pls PM me. Once i hv at least another 3 more interested parties, i will start a MO thread :)

actually, the 6 extra batts combine to speed up the refresh rate of the flash capacitor. which means there's actually 10 batteries at work here.

e.g. on the SB28, the full recharge time of 6 seconds drops to 2 secs when used with the SD8(a).
I hate breaking up my sets of 4 batteries... any other battery packs that use either 4 or 8 AA batteries??
