Basic Leica setup

There's no right or wrong really... if you ask me, i'd say start with a simple & basic setup first.

When the time calls for an upgrade, the fun part of hunting down RF gear begins! Don't you just love receiving EMS boxes?

Maybe I am screwed .. but I actually prefers the M3 to the MP .. :dunno:  :bsmilie:

Just pick whatever you think you can and want .. as you move along you will understand yourself better and settle down on the set that is good for you

Cheers

Er, your kinda standard need clarification. MP3 or M3? hahahahahahahahahahaha

:sticktong:bsmilie:

MP or MP3 both .. no doubt about the feel good factor

But I think it is the without metering factor on the M3 that makes you shoot what you see and not meter what you see .. not sure if I am making sense here  :bsmilie:

hallo lowlight...:)

I'd suggest to get an M2 first to try out as the build is very similar to an MP.
if i got myself an MP first, i'd leave it in my display cabinet more than i'd use it as i'd wouldn't want to risk damaging such a beauty. In the end, i'd bring out my M2 or M3 instead. For lens, i'd recommend 35mm as it's perfect for street shooting if that's your cup of tea.

A note on getting the M3, the RF coupling goes up to only 1m. If you get lenses miniumum focusing is 0.7m, you will have to guesstimate the last 0.3m. That being said, M3 is still one of the best cameras around. I use it along side with MP in a complimentary fashion. You will not go too wrong with any Leica M that is in good working condition. They are cameras hand built with love from Germany or Canada.

There are many M3 sets on resale that are modified for min focusing 0.7m

MP now price very ex coz Leica stopped making temporarily, due to lack of parts

My M3 was a double stroke modified to be single. So now its single stroke with buddha ears, very holy! haha
Oh yea, mine has been mod to hot 0.7m

My basic set up that shot Nepal in 2 weeks, day & night. One cam, one lens, 2 weeks & loads of film.

MP looks and feel nicer (new, and built-quality). The screw wind could be a little annoying, so a-la-cart-ing the M4 wind tab would be nice.

If you're an avid shooter and keen on shooting film, do note what you'll end up with. Right now I have about 80 unprocessed rolls of film lying all over my room. So if you can't be bothered to process heaps of your own film, you might consider the M8 or M9.

35mm has more flexibility in cramped spaces and is wide-enough to take in a lot of information. But sometimes theres too much information, and the 50mm is a much better choice to create stronger pictures because it excludes more unnecessary details.

Not everyone has infinite money, so you'll have to make the decision yourself.

I was wondering...any shop (like those at penisula) I can walk in without worrying I will kena chopped!

I don't mind buying off the counter, 2nd hand even if I feel at ease with the chap...don't want to be taken for a ride:embrass::embrass:

eh.... some times i find the prices at peninsula a tad higher than wat you can find here in buy/sell.

but if u must, can try benphoto. i see they have a pretty good selection of leica bodies on sale. plus, they do offer shop warranty for purchases.

so, what's the going rate for a MP in Singapore?

It is indeed a slippery slippery road...

Talk about slippery road. I was extremely careful after I gave up with films some 15 to 20 years, I just bought a simple SONY, the DSC-F1 when it first arrived in Singapore, to shoot pictures of my fish for a discussion forum and holiday mug shots. I kept all my film cameras in the dry cabinet and refused to look at any of the new digital offerings. I was very successful; I even refused to take out my beloved M3, although I still had lots of slide-films in my freezer then. I ought to congratulate myself until recently, one moment of indiscretion, while I did not slip, all of sudden I took one tiny little step in the dark and off the cliff I went so look where I landed:

Moving from right to left in the photo.
Ooch!! that hurt and hurt alot.

The Noct, fully open with its ultra shallow DOF, is difficult to focus perfectly especially when it is most needed, at low light. It is even more so when one has to wear glasses like I do. I am still working at it and attempting to get a proper correction lens for the view finder so that I do not need to ware glasses to shoot.
