Maybe will take up the Cathay Pacific offer. We are definitely going Hk for X'mas so may head to Cebu for the week before. Read got mantas, thresher and hammerhead sharks there!

Think the place is called Malapuasca, north Cebu. Check spelling though
The thresher shark place is called Malapascua - the specific dive site is Monad Shoal. Monad Shoal is a cleaning station for the threshers. Highly recommend it - I saw the threshers every dive at Monad Shoal - about 2.5 yrs ago. But a somewhat recent article from either Fins or Asian diver seems to suggest that the sightings have diminished - prob too many divers?? As for mantas, these are apparently seasonal only.

The hammerhead place (Cabilao Island, off Bohol) is gone - more precisely, all the hammerheads have been fished, at least according to reports. I heard from some divers who went in the 90's and they saw the hammies. I only saw blue water - the fish life there is zilch. You can hear frequent dynamite fishing going on while underwater.

so should I go? Should be just concentrating on North Cebu

Its very sad that Philippines is really over-fished. Dynamite fishing is blatant there. The ex-hammies island (cabilao) is so over-fished that you don't even see many small fishes - it is eerie to only see blue water along the reefs and no fish.

The dive operator i went with is Malapascua Exotic Island - think they were the pioneer dive operations there. www.malapascua.net. You may want to consider getting nitrox certified before going so that you get a lot more bottom time. That is something i'm still thinking of but not yet done! ;p

Tour agent just called....not tickets.....

Now waiting for Silkair Manado tics for dec. Hope there is a promo

hey kng! you wanna do nitrox ah?? go together leh!

Hmm... still thinking about it...

For nitrox certification, i think it is impt that your regular dive buddy also is nitrox qualified. Then it makes sense when both of you dive together. It doesn't make sense to have 1 buddy on air and the other on nitrox.

Also, not that many places offer nitrox and it seems that the use of nitrox has not really grown that much over the last 3 years since i've been thinking about it.

Any nitrox certified guys out there that can share their insights?

Got a note from Simply Scuba. They are offering Nixtro for S$190. 1 class room + 1 local waters dives (yeeks  ).

May want to join them .... for that paperchase sake....

Hi Waisj,

Still interested in the Bali trip? I have checked with some operators already, and they'll probably get back to me tom or so.

I am planning to if there's no vacancy for the air tickets in Dec, I will go in jan then. I am definitely on for Bali trip.

If you dun mind being a bit unconventional, try checking the trips with the

Kapal Selam Diving Club

Here you do get to meet the local divers on their leisure trip.

I think that should be acceptable.

BUT if he is relatively a new diver, i would recommend that he get a few more leisure dive before upgrading.

Hi Waisj (n to interested folks),

Here is one of the Operator's (recommended by Lensman) reply.
Not sure if the rates are good or least competitive though.

Pls give your valuable feedbacks n comments. Thks!

Hi Laixi,

Thanks for your interest in Bali Scuba. Let me give you the details of our
day trips ... Nusa Penida (US$85), Gili Tepekong ($85), Tulamben ($60),
Menjangan ($85), Amed ($70) and Padang Bai ($70). We don't usually dive Nusa
Dua or Sanur because the dive sites there are so poor.

These prices are per person and include all transport hotel to dive site &
return, lunch & soft drinks, tanks & weights for two dives, PADI
Instructor/Divemaster as guide.

Equipment rental is $15 per day for a full set.

Nusa Penida ... consisting of about 10 different dive sites ... has very
healthy corals, and a good variety of both reef fish and pelagics (and often
strong currents making for great drift diving). Gili Tepekong / Mimpang is
the best place to see sharks on Bali as well as a great swimthrough, but for
experienced divers only due to wicked currents. The USS Liberty wreck at
Tulamben is suitable for all levels and generally regarded as one of the
best sites in Bali (visited by over 400 species of reef fish, 100 pelagics)
and like Nusa Penida, Tulamben has a number of different dive sites. Padang
Bai is very famous for the beautiful 'Blue Lagoon' and wide variety of
marine life found there - often (but not always!) including sharks &
turtles. Menjangan has some very colourful dive sites, and the best
wall-diving in Bali as well as a wooden shipwreck starting at 40m. Amed has
some nice reefs (if you know where to look) and a great Garden Eel colony.

If you want more detailed information about these sites you can visit
http://www.kapalselam.org/bali.dive.sites.php. They give good & honest
descriptions.

Nusa Penida is the closest (about 40 mins. in our speedboat), Gili Tepekong
about one and a half hours by car then a few minutes by local boat, Padang
Bai about an hour by car then a few minutes by local boat, Tulamben about
two and a half hours by car (then beach entry), Amed about two hours by car
then a few minutes by local boat, Menjangan quite a looong way I'm afraid
... though if you want to go there on a day trip we will take you. These
times are from our dive centre here in Sanur, so add about 20 mins; anyway
we will pick you up and drop you back each day wherever you are staying.

If you want, instead of taking a series of day trips (and returning back to
the same location each night) I can prepare a diving / transport /
accommodation safari for you (staying overnight at different locations).
This will help you cut down on the travelling time and also give you a
chance to see around Bali. If you want me to do this please tell me how many
people, if you have your own equipment, how many days you want, and your
certification levels & approximate number of logged dives. Also whether you
prefer Budget, Standard, or Superior accommodation.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you want to make a booking, send you
details of a diving / transport / accommodation safari, or have any other
questions at all.

Best Wishes, Simon Gilbert (PADI Instructor 617694)
