you know repeating it could very easily kill or paralyse you? As long as you understand that, I don't care - as long as you aren't on a trip I'm on. I should still be able to dive if I just see your body from a distance and it's a different operator sending you back to shore.

It seems that this is getting personal...... :o

Again, I'm not try to justifty my action to you. But neither will I be a hypocrite and tell you I wouldn't do it again, when in my heart i know i would.

I know the danger of what did, but sorry to said.... am not sorry for doing it. And thxs for your repented warning on how I should dive the 'right way'...... and if it makes you feel any better...... I too, am glad that I wouldn't be diving with you.

Thxs again :D

It'ss not personal. I just don't want my trip ruined or cut short to transport a victim to shore.

As you have noted, you seem to understand that you'll likely get seriously injured or killed by diving that way so that's your business. I don't have to worry about others on the trip or your family / friends so it's no skin off my nose. Happy diving.

chill man :)
we all meant well lah.. its not worth it one..

Indirectly you'll affect us.. because you might just become a statistic.

and chasing the creature might just scare it away.. hence someone in the group might just missed out the chance to see it :(

I again thxs everyone. I know all of you meant well.

I'm not here to justify or explain my action..... but to tell it as it was. :D

hmm, what should i say here?

besides the usual mod's " Please dont turn a photo sharing thread into an argument one, and end up i have to shut it down". I am fully aware of where Zippsy is coming from. (though Zippsy could have go easier with this guy, like the way you always are on the boat ;p )

diver-hloc, we all meant well, hope you can take a step back and take the advice down easy. it's really for the benefit for everyone, ya :) if you can dive to see the whaleshark many more times in future, why risk to see it only once? I would ascend to see the whaleshark too, my god, where did it come from right??? as much as within the dive comp limits definitely, thats what we bought it for, to keep us in check and safe ;)

gosh, i miss the molas ... but i have so little time and money to go back... havent been to so many places!!

but i sure dont miss the cooolllldddd waters ;p

diver-hloc, i think your shots have turned out pretty ok and your camera can serve you a longer way, like most of us have stayed with our cameras. :) what new feature does A650IS has?

Oops, Sorry. I certainly didn't mean to start an argument. In fact, I don't think we weren't arguing. I believe DH understands that diving that way is extrememly dangerous and life threatening but can he make his own choices. I was just a little worried that other people who don't understand physics or physiology may think it's okay to do that or that nature somehow gives "whale shark exemptions".

Also, I didn't mean for the posts to be personal or insulting. It just took me a while to understand that a whale shark photo / sighting could be valued so highly by anyone and worth that risk.

I do understand the "chase" for a whale shark. I had been diving for 14 years before I saw my first. I spent a ton of money on a trip to Utila, Honduras just to see them (and didn't!) and I spent too much time staring out into the blue at the Seven Skies on every dive there. When I did see my first one though, I made sure I still dived safely so that I ended up also seeing my second, third, fourth and fifth ones. I'm looking for number six this weekend. :D

"IS" being the most important..... and the capability to use 8GB SDHC SD card. :D

Again I would like to state that I know all here meant well...... and I apologize if it seems I'm rude in my writings......

But being in my 30's..... I don't like to be treated as a child, being told what's good for me. Like I said a few times before, I mainly states what happen during the dive. Not teaching nor encouraging any other divers to follow suit. Therefore the last thing I had in mind was to be judge only on my action, instead of my photos.

I have no real ill feeling towards anyone here...... so, no worrieds :)

is the IS effective? tried shooting in low light?

i quite tempted to get one leh.. hmm im suppose to quit.. hahahaaha ops

We're not telling you what to do. Just voicing out the consequences :)

POst more photos! :D hotlinking them will be better for comments

No sure about shooting in low light. But so far there isn't a report saying it isn't good. On land at least :(. I do mostly Macro photo..... but Bali has few places for it. So, the IS would be good for shots where there might be some small movement due to current.

Was thinking of using it with a Inon Wide Angle or Macro 'wet lense'. Will be cheaper and more useful than a U/W casing for my EOS 400D. ;)

yes, cheaper, but the image quality is of a different class!
((=

frankly, i find the DSLR easier to use underwater. was using a D200 in S&S housing. alot less post-processing needed, and image quality beats the compact anytime

I'll be the first to admit what you say to be true. :)

But......

DSLR's U/W casing for my EOS 400D would cost about $1800 with just 1 port for the 18-55mm lense. Its big, heavy and the type of photo I could take (Wide Angle or Macro) depends very much on the lense I bring down with me. Will hate to miss the whale shark because I was taking photos of Nudi...... or the other way around.:(

A compact + its U/W casing will cost me around $750-$850. I could still afford to get myself another Inon Strobe (aiming for D200S as my slave strobe) + new arm & tray system. With luck, could maybe add a wide angle or macro 'wet lense' into the package. But what I wanted most from the compact is the capability to take AVI movies which I edit with Ulead video studio 9 into MPEG2 movies for DvD.

Hahaha.... hope one day a DSLR could also take AVI movies, then it will solve one of my problem. ;p

Can't a 18-55mm take either Wide Angle or Macro shots without changing the lens?

Depends on the port, and your definition of wide-angle and macro ... hehe.

The port needed to enable you to zoom, has an extra knob and a gear ring. As with things that have more parts ... it costs more :P

Because of the magnification factor of digital, 18mm is similar to what used to be 24mm on film, so is the "new" standard for normal wide-angle (in my opinion). Most zoom lenses take macro up to 1:4, compared to 1:1 for a "true" macro lense. So is it wide enough .. and is it macro enough?

No one camera will ever fulfill the needs of the users ... even if the camera manufacturers claim otherwise.

:P Jeff

yup, your 18-55 kit lens is equivalent to a 28-70, so its not really wide enough. you'll probably need a ultra-wide like the 10-22 or tiktok 12-24 for truly stunning WA shots.

plus i think flat ports decrease the angle of view as compared to domes. something to do with the virtual image created by the dome, blahblahblah. not very sure about that. i read somewhere that flat ports also give you larger magnification as compared to domes, but still looking for a more comprehensive explanation.

wow really? you're such a wonderful person! if i were a hot babe in a white bikini i would so totally fall in love with you!

unfortunately i'm an overweight middle-aged chinese male that has trouble fitting into tiny red speedos, so i'm afraid you're not going to get a housing and ports...
