Yupe, speng.
Same here for both SereneXMM and I.
We gave up after a while at Besakih simply because there was enough light upon the Merus.
And the difference between the dark and bright was too great.

EDIT: Hmmm... maybe not that the difference was too great. It was simply because there wasn't enough light.
And everything was really dark.

Our good friend has more important things in life to pursue.
E.g. travel to far away land in the North-west to recce first, so that in the future if he were to go again, he would know exactly what to expect and how to go about it.

Speng, SereneXMM, Adrian....
Looks like we are on our own already now.
I am beginning to feel something missing in my life... :(
... although for only a short two weeks.
Haiz.... OK... let's push on lah.

hi
new here and simply enjoying all those beautiful bali shots shared here!
planning to go there in Oct to take a break away from work
so wonder if you folks can share some info

1. Kecak dance
really magical, but how near/far are you from the dancers? (focal length?)
and what f-number? if u say f1.4 ~ 1.8, i think i can give up liao
maybe just take videoclip will do for me :bsmilie:

2. how far is the (approx) traveling time from say
kuta -> sanur?
sanur -> tegalallang?
sanur -> Besakih?

originally planned to stay in ubud but could not secure any room. so going to end up at Tune Kuta ~ and taking day trips from there. Perhaps rent scooter to go around if distance is not too far.

any useful tips for single traveler?

Many thanks!

Hey Guys,

Just disappeared for 2 days and so many things happened. Welcome to the club SPeng, very mood photos you have, thoroughly enjoyed them, you really have a great eye for detail :) I already sms'ed JJ a few days back, she's kinda busy so hopefully we'll see her soon. Have a good trip Bro SK! Bring back beautiful photos of Xinjiang for us.

Just to check, in my return email to you guys, did you all receive the instructions on how to post photos in that email? Don't forget the photos you have to email me for your travel memoir as well, Tks!

Lastly, need to apologise for the model shoot. This is only our second model shoot and i've picked up alot, so hopefully we will improve with future model shots. I understand the lighting from the reflector was abit different (warmer) than the white light (cooler) experienced at Tegalallang, thus it turned out abit un-natural. Anyway, here's my best shot of her, still abit green to this so pls pardon the technical errors

Hello BlurFoto, tks for dropping by, allow me to answer some of your questions:

1. Lighting at the Kecak dance at Batubulan is at a premium, so i suggest a high ISO and the fastest lens you got. Focal length depends on what you want to capture (whole stage vs dancers close up). We were right at the front row (abt 20-25 feet away). Go early around 6.00pm to "chop" seats. Placing tissue paper not allowed :p

2. Kuta - Sanur = 25 mins pending jam. Taxi will cost you around Rp50-70k depending on which part of Sanur you go.

3. Sanur - Tegalallang is about 45 mins to 1 hr.

4. Sanur to Bersakih is about 2 hrs. Do note you will need a Sarong to enter Bersakih, it will cost you about Rp20-50k per sarong.

5. Tunes at Kuta is rather basic. Toilets are extremely cramped and the shower and toilet is separated. I would recommend the Sindhu Merta at Sanur area as its centralised and a good place to base yourself.

By the way, October is rainy season so try to go early Oct if possible. Good thing is you get nice blue sky and beautiful cloud formations after rain. It rains alot during afternoons and evenings but who knows, your luck might hold. I have terrible luck with weather :dunno:

Hello blurfoto, firstly good to have you on board and thanks for your compliment, on behalf of all my travelmates.
I am sure Adrian from SgTrekker is in a much better position to answer these good questions you have, but he is er... kind of busy right now.
So if you don't mind, allow me to share with you what little I know.

1. Kecak Dance. Go early. We were an hour earlier before the performance started and we got the front row seats. The stage measures roughly about 10m x 10m. (around there). So depending on what kind of shots you want - you can have a telezoom of up to 200mm focal length or an UWA (10mm or 11mm on a cropped body, or 16 or 17mm on a FF body).
It will be good to have fast lenses of f/2.8 or wider. But from our Trek leader Adrian's experience, his lenses weren't f/2.8. They were, if I wasn't wrong, f/3.5-5.6 and he did an even better job than me!
At the end of the day - what is important is ISO.
If your camera has got good ISO capability, bump it all up and keep the shuttle speed to 1/100 or faster for the dancers move quite a bit.

2. Travelling time to these places only about an hour. Really not far. In fact, Bali is not that big.

Well, hope these help.

Thanks sgtrekker, limwhow

Sindhu Merta a looks like a good base for exploring further. perhaps another time :(
not too particular with accommodation as i reckon i will be out most of the time, just need to clean & same place to rest
i still eyeing for a nite in ubud ~ coz got a few makans (babi guling, dirty duck, banana chicken etc) I like to try hahahahhaa

my leaves are in the mid Oct ... oops (not that I have a choice due to work schedules)!
certainly hope El Nino shifted the weather pattern but will take note to wet weather wear! *finger crossed*

Kecak still very challenged, high ISO almost every camera also got, but I believe good performing aren't cheap.
i reckon my results sure to be blur foto again LOLz

Just starting to take photo after a very long hiatus, so very basic equipment. But thinking of getting simple P&S (e.g LX5) for this trip hehehehehe :P

While Adrian and gang were busy looking for setups for Miss Winny at Tegalallang Rice Terrace,
I caught sight of this interesting row of huts... one of which would turn out to be the backdrop for our model.

Appreciating the Terrace? Or maybe I should say Appreciating the Terrain,
keeping in mind now that Lara Croft is an official Indonesian Marines Special Force...

Lousy shot in composition.
Toned down the redness and yellowness in her face from the reflections of the golden reflector.

Now hey this one is certainly something.
SereneXMM never let go of any chance to take a picture with any beautiful local Beauties,
especially with one who has to potential to be the next Miss Indonesia.
After the last trip, the model who took a photo with SereneXMM became Miss Vietnam,
she just wants to try and see if history would repeat itself or not... Hahaha...

Good morning brother Wee How!
Still OT-ing is it? :bsmilie:

OK, time for bed now! Will continue tomorrow to enjoy your work and the special force XMM one ... Nite!

Hello Auntie Serene,
This portrait is very beautiful.. May I ask why you carry so many cameras? What is the purpose? Are you using Full frame and Crop Camera for the different shots?:)
Sorry, I am still a Newbie..

Hello Miss MGohzxc.
Thank you vert much for you kind praises.
It is indeed amazing to have a young lady like yourself to have such interest in photography, and on top of that, to have such independence and initiative to come onto the forum and communicate with people who are much older.
That is really commendable!
I am sure you will find yourself learning from all the experience photographers here, like that way I have,
