Bad experience at The Camera Workshop

planned to dropby that shop later. lucky found this....save my time...

Hi, Every one likes to chop. (including me and you) It is business, just do homework.

I too have bad experience with this shop.
Served by the China guy too..
I was looking for Tamron 17-50 F2.8 Pentax mount. The china guy said "we don't sell Pentax lens". B4 I asked I already spotted one in their boxes of Tamrons. So I told him & point to him.

That lens was selling $618 (SLR Rev but no stock) ,$620 (TK Foto). The china guy quoted by $580. So when i aksed if it's 3yrs warranty, the china guy said only 1yr shop warranty. I already sick of waiting for this lens so I thoguh if with furtherdiscount I'll just grab even though it's only 1yr warranty. The china guy refuse to give any discount despite I told him it's just only $40 less for less 2yrs of warranty.

So I asked him to check with his boss. The old man (Nelson?) same too refuse to give discount but offer me a free no-brand UV 67mm filter. I was so desperate at that time as I just to use the lens the next day & of cos I can buy from TK Foto for just $40 more with additional 2 more yrs of warranty, but TK is closing shop soon (close at 7pm, me at that time is abt 6:30pm).

So I took the offer & test the lens, snap 2 shots of it at my 40mm prime lens. Very sharp & I was satisfied, I put back the covers but not sure how to clsoe the rear one (1st time handle a Tammy lens), so I passed to the china guy to box it up while I prepare to make payment. He also not sure how to close the rear cover & tried cannot & anyhow wanted to put into the box, but he dropped it. I heard the sound & look at the china guy, he blamed me when passed to him never close properly & made him drop the lens. :o
I requested to test the lens again.
Upon testing the pics no more sharp. He tried also cannot, so he seek the old man for help. I snapped at my same 40mm lens (so as to compare the 1st 2 shots I took earlier on). The old man commented that my way of taking pics the posture was wrong & can never take sharp pics. :what:
So he took a shot but not on my lens, rather on the Tammy box with big huge fonts & show me it's sharp. :o
I showed him the pics of my 40mm lens, the text "40mm", "Japan" all were out of focus. He pretended to be busy & walk away. So I keep back my cash & rushed to TK by cab & luckily I managed to get from there b4 they close shop.

This shop really

horror stories.... i guess it's safer to stick with the bigger stores...

If you look at a tamron rear lens cap, you have to match the lines on the rear lens cap to the lens marker. If you put it any other way, you will not be able to turn and lock down the lens cap. This is the same for Tokina rear lens caps. I will always buy spare nikon/copy ones and use those instead. Find the Tamron/tokina rear lens caps too troublesome.

And you know the shop is going to sell the same lens to the next unsuspecting bloke that ask for that lens.

To add if you like to interchange your lens rear caps, Tamron's (Canon) can only be used for EF lenses and not EF-S...

I'm not sure, maybe? :dunno:
Sure they are not able to get service from local distro.

about 6yrs ago...i went TCW to sell my Canon 300D....this young guy..i guess he already left already...this is what i had observed ...he took my camera and open the front cap placed on the table..than busying do something...i saw it..he put some dust onto the Mirror..than he turn around and show me ...there dust on your camera...so we need to clean and service.....than i took back my camera and run away..

I have also had a bad experience with them recently.

About 2 weeks ago, I went to the shop hoping to buy a 3rd party lens for my Canon.

When I entered the shop, I stood in the middle of the shop for about 5 mins and no one came to service me. There were a few staffs which were not doing anything at the moment. However, one angmo entered the shop and one of the staff immediately went to service him.

As I'm not sure about which brand to get, I asked one of the guy's opinion on what is a good F2.8 lens for general use. He told me I have to know what I want first and even told me to go and find out the pros and cons of different brands. I was puzzled, that was the purpose of going to the shop, to find out more.... He stared at me as if I'm from another planet.

If I know the pros and cons, I wouldn't have ask him for advice, I'd have just asked for the price. Basically, he just look down on me and treat me like an idiot. I have bought from them in the past before. After this incident, I will not patronise them even if they have the best price.

Don't go there if you want to be treated like an idiot.

I only had 1 transaction history with them. in 2006 with sigma 10-20 . That time they quite ok.
But I agree the general vibe I get when I step to the shop is not very good.
I rather go across to Cathay or John 3:16 if you're in the vicinity.
AP@funan also I boycott. Very beng-ish and the salesman (the fat guy) doesn't know his stuff but try to talk through the nose . It can only work when chopping those ang mo but unfortunately not someone who knows his stuff :)

I thought only cars and machines need servicing?

Maybe that is why the two tamron 17-50 grey set that I tried at the shop were both even way worse than kit lens.

I had bad experience at TCW too. They tried to sell me a grey set D90 at local set price and insisted that the set is NSC set when the box only had the japanese warranty card. When I ask them about the warranty, they ever dare to tell me that NSC don't need warranty card and that if there is any issue, can just bring back to tcw, they will send it to NSC for me...wow so kind ah. Only till I kpkb then they finally admit that is a grey set. Really a con shop sia.:nono:

I have known Nelson since Fotoguide days. Once i wanted to buy a Canon EF-S lens, i stepped into TCW and Nelson quoted me a special price that is inclusive of shop warranty of 1 year. As it was cash payment, and need to pay extra 2-3 % if made payment was by VISA, I decided to go to the UOB ATM across the road at Capital Centre. As i was cutting across Penisular Plaza, i decided to make a detour to find how much more Cathay Photo was charging for the same lens with agent warranty.

I was :bheart: shocked :bheart: when i heard the price difference. Since then I have never buy lens from TCW.
