Unfortunately, Singapore has more techies and gadget-lovers than craftmen or photographers combined. All they know is what is the best and most expensive photo equipment, when to upgrade and how to make Cathay Photo richer.

You are right! People in SG generally care more about their image/outlooks rather than what they really can do in photography sense........and some ego's are so big they have to show off that they bought the latest gadgets, not fully exploiting the equipment they had before....

They are more techies than 'photo' techies, they don't even make more decent photos than the average dog....they are just testing the camera before dumping it off for the next 'toy'........

Overhere in HK, the people are more serious in phototaking is my first impression......despite all the negative views on Hong Kong people Singaporeans told me before moving here. I believe there is some 'superiority' feeling in SG, regarding the surrounding countries, and this reflect in their image conciousness.........and in the camera sales in SG :-), but I don't think Cathay would mind.......

all those silly Buy Buy threads and the likes are getting no where, choking up the bandwith of this forum, luckily some more serious people still visit this site.....(like me with my silly postings sometimes).

On the positive end, Singapore is also one of the best place to buy used photo equipment. Why? Because most of the equipment sold here are hardly used. The owner "test, test," don't like it and decided to sell it.

For good used prices and a huge choice go to Japan, used lenses are priced lower than used here...........(though new they are much higher....).

Relax lah. Think of it as an ecosystem. The consumerites absorb the depreciation and lower prices for the craftsmen and photographers. And say what you like, it is my humble opinion that the standard of phototaking in Singapore has improved because of Clubsnap (so much so that I dare not post anymore - my lousy standard cannot measure up).

Very brave to say such things in a largely Singaporean populated forum.

Terms like "average dog" (!), "superiority", "choking up the bandwidth" might get you banned for good :bsmilie:

More on a serious side (yes, I can be serious sometimes), I think it shows strength to know and admit ones weaknesses.......hopefully this makes people think and improve what they are doing, be it photography or something else.

Comparing with other (less rich) Asian countries, creativity is still not there yet, whatever they try to do at school, this is something that can't be 'learned'. It has to come by itself, by opening up oneself....

Just investing millions doesn't achieve it if the people don't have the 'heart'......there is this mentality that one can do anything as long as you have the money, well not always it will work that way.......especially in art and science (I have personal experience in this field as several of you may know).

Maybe it is because one always read in the papers that Singapore has won this prize, that prize, that they are the best in this and that........this makes the people think they ARE the best.......
