B+W filters: worth paying so much?

Nv use a lens pen. I have coating came off my b+w mrc because of that. Use a microfiber cloth or blower.
Now, new type release.
Which one is better?
1) B + W XS-Pro Digital Filters
(Provide Extra-Slim Mounting Rings that Eliminate Problems Associated with SLR Wide-angle and Telephoto Imaging.) B+W XS-Pro Digital Filters have front threads for mounting additional accessories such as filters, screw on shades and lens covers. XS-Pro filter rings are made of brass and are matt black to prevent reflections. A Clear Type 007 MRC filter is now available. Planned are 010 UV MRC & KSM circular pol-filter MRC (unknow when release??).
2) Hoya HD filters
HARDENED GLASS/WATERPROOF / SCRATCH & STAIN RESISTANT MULTI-COATING
Will be available in UV and Circular Polarizers in standard sizes from 52mm ~ 82mm in May, 2008.
3) B + W MRC F-pro
My comment: Is worth paying as glass, very easy to clean but glass thickness NOT slim enough.

With B+W filters....I just use my clothe / T-shirts to clean:bsmilie:
what!! are you serious? using a lens pen will remove the mrc coating? how do you know that the coating is removed? then what about those stains on the front elements of the lens?
i do use a lens pen to clean both the front element and the filter, will this erode/remove the coating on them? can any one verify what our fellow CSer has said? thanks!

depends on lens.. things like 50mm 1.8 and kit lens i using tokina/hoya.
will consider b+w if getting lens>1000

Yes i m serious. I was happily using it a few year ago. Untill i notice my filter's coating is uneven. The edges which i always clean has coating disappearing. Shine it against the light and see the coating reflection.
Use it on your own risk. Do a search i think there are other user experience too.
Now i just blow off the dust then clean it with a microfiber cloth.

i was using the lenspen on my filter only for 6 months the most. Cleaning is only like maybe thrice a months after taking pictures. And i had the problem of coating coming off.
while using a microfiber cloth, i dont have this problem of coating coming off till now.

cleaning the lens 18 times in 6 months with one lenspen? Perhaps that is the problem.
I think:
- you clean the filters too frequently. Why will you need to clean the filters 3 times a month? What was on the filters? For me, I will use it only when there are obvious fingerprints/smuges on the filters. So, perhaps I will use it 2-3 times a year at most.
- You didn't change to a new Lenspen often enough. If you are using it so frequently, perhaps you should have use a new Lenpens after every 2 months instead of 6. Every time you use the same Lenspen on filters, you are introducing contaminents onto the tip of the Lenspen. So, after a while, you are scratching your filters with the the contaminents when trying to clean the filters.
For a tool that costs only $10, I would suggest replacing it after using not more than 5 times.

The reason for cleaning the filter 3 times each month is because i was taking pictures almost every weekend of the month. so cleaning the filter after use it my habit.
The environment is dusty and hence there is dirt that i cant blow off hence use the lens pen.
Now that you say, it does make sense that it might be the contaminent causing the problem i had.
But I replaced the lenspen with my oakley micro fiber cloth for cleaning and it solves the problem.

The lens pen may have low quality chemicals that corrode.
I don't like lens pen.
Clean a lens once with cloth and if necessary a bit of good quality lens fluid. When you just bought it. Then put a UV or skylight filter on it.
So that you never have to clean the lens front element again.
Filters - just wipe with cloth or use blower.

here is my logic. if I've spent so much money on the lens, and then stinge on the filter... it's like spending so much money on the Ferrari I've always wanted, only to ask if I could cut some corners by changing them Pirellis to Kumho instead.

I do that too when if I feel lazy to take cloth out of my bag,
I just got myself a 77mm HD UV for my new lens today. As compared to my B+W UV haze, the HD UV appears to be clearer than the B+W UV haze. The HD UV is also much thinner than UV haze - somewhat similar to my B+W clear. Hence, HD UV is perfect for UWA lenses. It is a mid point between BW UV haze and BW clear. The temperature is just nice for me.
If you think cleaning a B+W filter is easy, try cleaning a Hoya HD. I was shocked for good when I try cleaning it today... it is easier than easy....
Last, I prefer the metal rim/screw on the HOya HD than BW as it is much smoother, hence making screwing in/out easier

Price wise, I paid $140 bucks for a 77mm Hoya HD UV; when the BW UV Haze and clear is selling for $130 and $150 respectively...
Just a token of my thoughts after my good experience with Hoya HD... To me its 90% perfect (10% imperfect for its cost!)
