Seriously, I* don't see what (tf) the big deal is.

Don't you guys already know that the rich, and/or influential live within different rules than Joe Average? (Even in N.S. you can see the difference in preference and treatment given to "white horses".) Who cares about your miserable time serving NS, your patriotism, your continued torture and time wasting serving 13 years of reservist? It's just too bad that you were not born into that segment of society.

Get over it, that's just life. Just be grateful that there are mavericks in the press who are willing to publish the story.

*Speaking as one who served the mandatory 2.5 years and who just had a call a few days ago about recall manning........

I understand that the implied authority to shoot only exists during war time and in combat situations. ANy other situations won't even warrant such extreme measures, and even in wartime/combat, I doubt such measures are even appropriate (which is the subject of hte present discussion)

Today's forum has a statement from Mindef.
Mr Melvyn Tan is NOT a Singapore citizen. Citizenship was renounced in 1978.
Well, with this piece of information, I think it puts things in a little perspective.
Since he's no longer a Singaporean citizen then I think the fine would have been about right for him. I don't think they can or should jail a British citizen for non-elistment in Singapore.

Hmmmm, but wait, isn't he touted as a Singaporean Hero?

Isn't it sad that most of our talent are either foreign or Local-born but not having local citizenship?

I REFER to Mr Liew Kai Khiun's letter, 'Are NSmen's sweat and tears worth only $5,000?', and Mr Samuel Oh Chee Ooi's letter, 'What is Mindef's stand on draft dodgers?' (ST, Nov 22).

All able-bodied male Singapore citizens are required to serve national service to contribute to the peace, security and stability of the country. Singaporeans enjoy the socio-economic benefits that this stability brings and are expected to shoulder the responsibility of national defence.

Mindef takes a serious stand on all defaulters who evade their national-service duty. Defaulters will have to bear the consequences of their action and will be dealt with by the courts under the Enlistment Act.

They are, on conviction, liable for an imprisonment term not exceeding three years or a fine not exceeding $5,000, or both. The exact sentence will be determined by the courts.

Besides having to answer to the courts for their national-service offences, defaulters will also have to serve their national service if they are still liable for national service.

In the case of Mr Melvyn Tan, although he had renounced his Singapore citizenship in 1978, he remained liable for the national-service offence and has been dealt with by the courts in accordance with the Enlistment Act.

My reservist PDF unit consists of 24yr old to 36 yr old.
I was 30 when serving my 1st ICT.
When charging up hill, u can see the 24yr far far in front.... :bsmilie:
But, u will notice those older do thing in a much systematic ways. Better organised.

Hahaha... agreed. During BMT, do whatever was told, be it stupid things or not.
Charge, there's a hole, also dunno to avoid, just go straight & fall in it. That's what happened to my Section mates. 7 man, left 2, the other 5 fell in a waist-line hole.:bsmilie:

actually even though he's a british citizen he can still be jailed as the offence occured when he's still sg citizen.

but i dun really care.
I still find it pek chek when think abt having to serve army when others didn't but then if you think about it.
there are so many clerks and drivers ard when they are perfectly fit to serve
but they get to stay out and the army PAYs them leh..

i get paid better but wah lau they stay out leh!

at least this guy is paying back the govt...

Dont' want to quote so many passages, but from the last 10 posts, here's somethign to cosnider.

Isn't a worthy balance simply to shorten the years from 2 yeras to like few months or 6 months or wahtever's appropriate. Those who have been through NS know that out of the 2 yeras, a lot of it is spent waiting, idling, sitting around, doing nothing, etc.

Even now in reservist, out of 14 days, maybe only 5 days you do something.

Armies all over the world perform the same routine. It's called "Hurry up and wait".
