Avatar question

So I don't seem to be able to upload, OR link to, any images larger than 13k for my avatar. The best I can do for 13k or less is VERY compressed, and a lot of detail is lost (even detail that would be visible at 100x100). Yet some of you guys seem to have quite detailed little images. How did you bypass the 13k max, or how else did you get non-crappy images up as your avatars?
