Guys, can rent-a-car and drive up there. I did so last week. 1 day I think about $80 plus insurance. They will service the car and ensure a safe ride. Then you guys can take turns to drive. Dont drive flashy cars in. But my Maleka friend told me its all SG cars there during the weekend anyway. Very safe but If you dont wish to trash your car, then rent one
Things to try:
1. Chicken rice ball (but they super long Q during lunch hours, esp Singaporean during the weekend. ) Please only go to the utmost end store which has 3 shops combined into 1, with wooden china-like looking foyer. Thats the original. They rest are all hypes. White chicken only. 4/5
2. Chendol (sexiest gula Maleka aka coconut brown sugar. I ate the original pure one. DIE DIE must TRY!) The original store is BaBa one with super natural light back foyer. How to spot it? Got BaBa laksa right beside it. Please remember to buy back the Dry Gula Maleka, your mum will love you. I bought some back myself and she said: "good, you know your stuff" 5/5
3. Pork organ Satay (interesting and they have a fruit bar for you to detox after the grills). Where to find it? Besides the guitar and DJ shop. Only 1 in Maleka. 3.5/5
4. Crepes. (this is a MUST try. It is in a cafe walking down after the DJ academy. So super nice, one can easily have 3. My friend's friend opened that store last time and made millions). Really super sexy. I tried all flavours that day, all super nice! 5/5
5. Back alley cockles with yong tau fu. (old skool hand-made yong tau fu, fresh and clean cockles with BBQ dried cuttle fish, the old skool taste is back! The alley itself is a photographer's dream. Think CUBA street. Never tried so sexy and raw food in my life for awhile and certainly brings back nice memories. Dont worry, food is top notch clean. The owners are super wealthy you cant tell. Food is excellent. 5/5
6. Wine by the river. Only 2 bars by the river full of monitor lizards (you can catch alot swimming in the day) each of them have their old flavours to boost. Clean, comfortable and nice wines from Riggit $75 to $500 a bottle, you will be spoilt for choice. Words cannot describe the experience with a few friend sipping wine there. Reminds me of Venice. 5/5
7. 3rd grand uncle store. Can buy all sorts of local goodies for you family here. Cant miss it, it is located right in the heart of Maleka currently with the Prime minister banner in front of the building. 2 storey high, the top is a cafe for local ice cold white coffee and other stuff. Good to rest your feets and buy some food back to shut your wife. Other choice is the "3rd grand uncles's father store which is located further up. All food in production in Malaysia can be found there!!! Really factory shopping, everything you want! 5/5
8. Corner bar. Right in the center, a cross junction there is an irish bar. looks normal below, just head upstairs (they have a chain to stop people from going up, just ask for permission, the friendly staff are more than happy to show u upstairs.) Super super natural light haven. One can shoot inside the nice wooden decor or just sip beer or coffee and stare blank into the busy street of Maleka. 4/5
Field report
Its dry and hot now. Nice for B&W with red filters. There are loads of really good bars to rest your feet and have a cold beer. streets are packed on weekend and most of the shops will be open (not all open when I was there on a weekday).
Evening time please use colour film as the entire place will light up with a very romantic pink light throughout. Shinning on the colourful and red shophouses, you can propose to a girl and she will say yES! So please shoot before trying the No.5 food.
The idea is not to eat full meals else you only try one place. Not shiok. Do not complete your meal as you really can eat so much more at every different place. So dun just bet on the chicken rice although the chicken is super smooth. Trust me, my tummy nearly exploded with all the good food even though I ate so little each meal just for fun.
Truely enjoyed myself, cheap and good get away. But I dont think I will be joining you guys this round as I might have something on that day.
Just how magical:
