Edit: taken from dpreview:

"..Smile Shutter detects faces in Live View mode, automatically firing the shutter at just the right moment to capture happy, relaxed smiles."

Wat the heck is tat? the subject smile and the cam auto fire shutter??!!! do we need tat??? does it really work??

Ah... so it is A-900 minus 2% of VF and minus 2 fps...

Obviously those are not the most important attribute... if it is $1k cheaper than A-900, I think it is a very good DSLR to have.

To me, it is identical to A-900 for every practical purposes, just cheaper.

I don't shoot wedding, otherwise will be good as second camera. I will pass on this one for now.

For those who is looking for a FF, this is your best bet.

Smile detection already exist in Sony Cybershot and some Sony Ericsson Cybershot handphone. Is not something new.

I am more curious about the new Auto HDR mode. It has HDR built in!! Hmm... Very tempting... Err... I mean, very interesting...

EDIT:

From the preview:

Key features

The A550 and A500 represent a new category of camera for Sony and the specification makes it look like the company is aiming fairly squarely for Canon's 500D and Nikon's D5000, pitching a little above both in terms of most specifications.

* 12.3 and 14.2 mp CMOS Exmor sensors
* Manual Focus Check Live View using the main imaging sensor
* 5fps in optical viewfinder mode (7fps with focus and exposure locked on A550)
* New user interface
* HDR mode that combines multiple exposures
* 5-level manually selectable Dynamic Range Optimization
* Screen articulates up or down by 90 degrees
* Increased battery life (1,000 shots when using the viewfinder on the A500

Now I am even more interested... The fps also pretty good!

True... Only for some Cybershot P&S using Exmor R sensor:

I read somewhere, Exmor R is more expensive to built for DSLR size sensor, so is more reasonable to put in smaller sensor size P&S camera. Maybe in the future, Sony will put in a DSLR.

Taken from Alphamountworld,

"...Underneath it has a brand new higher sensitivity 14.2 CMOS Sensor (not a CCD like the A350/380) with sensitivity capabilities now reaching ISO 12,800 and a new Bionz Processor specifically developed for these cameras. Sony has stated that the A550/500's new sensor output are highly impressive in terms of noise control and detail retention at higher sensitivities in comparison to previous designs."

Well now to get our hands on some sample images... kekeke

Hehe... Now, I like to see a bit of review to this camera body. It seems more suitable for people like me...
